otherhealthandsafetyguidance.

andprovidesadviceonsafeATVuseinagriculture.Italsoexplainsthecurent
requirementsoftheWorkplaceSafety&InsuranceActandtheOc upational

orisconsideringusing,anal-terainvehicle(ATV).
IfyouareregisteredwiththeWorkplaceSafetyandInsuranceBoard(WSIB)orpay
workersaspartofyourfarmoperation,yourworkplacefalsundertherequirements
oftheWorkplasceSafetyandiInsuranceAct(WSIA)andtheOc upationalHealth
andSafetyAct(OHSA).Folowingtherecommendationsofthisbo kletwil as ist

WhyATVSafety?
RatherthanprovidingalistofstatisticsofATV-relatedinjuriesanddeaths,hereare
someobservationsbasedonrecentATVac identsinOntarioandtherestofCanada.

Caryingapas engerontheATV
Refusingtowearahelmet
Inadequatetrainingorsupervision,especialyofyoungpeopleandchildren
Useofpo rly-maintainedequipment,orolder,unsafeATVmodels
Inrecentyears,ATV-relateddeathsandseriousinjurieshaveshakenmany
Ontariocommunites.SomehaveinvolvedtheuseofATVsasworkplace
equipmentinforestry,agriculture,andotherindustries.Othershavetakenplace
duringrecreationalactivites.Manyhaveinvolvedyoungpeopleandchildren.In
mostcases,thesedeathsandinjuriescouldhavebe npreventedbybetertraining,
saferprocedures,ormorecarefulequipmentmaintenance.
Thegoalofthisbo kletistobringtogetherthemostreliableinformationonATV
safety,andmakeitap licabletothespecialsituationsinOntarioagricultural
operations.

WhatisanATV?
Theinformationinthisbo kletap liestofour-whe ledor“quadtype”al-terain
vehicles.(Othertypesofequipmentaresometimesalsocaledal-terainvehicles,
particularlyinothercountries.)Thisbo kletdoesnotdealwiththesafeoperationof
snowmobiles,dirtbikes,or idingmowers.Thesevehiclesal havetheirownspecial
featuresandsafetyhazards,whicharebeyondthescopeofthisbo klet.
At heendofthisbo klet,youwil findabriefdiscus ionofthefour-whe led
andsix-whe ledutiltyvehiclesthatmorecloselyresembleasmal carthana
four-whe ledmotorcycle.ThesevehiclesaresignifcantlydiferentfromATVs
inmanyways,andmaybebetersuitedtosometypesofagriculturaltasks
thanATVs.
ThefirstATVssoldinNorthAmericaweretricycle-typevehicles,withonewhe l
infrontandtwointheback.Sincethe1980s,thre whe ledATVshavenotbe n
manufacturedorsoldinNorthAmerica,becausetheirinstabiltymadethemprone
toseriousroloverac idents.Theorganizationofdoctorswhooftentreatpeople
injuredinATVac idents,theAmericanAcademyofOrthopedicSurgeons,has
adoptedastrongly-wordedresolutionsup ortingthebanonthre whe ledATVs.
Ifyoustil haveathre -whe ledATV,FSAstronglyurgesyoutoreplaceitwitha
safer,fourwhe ledmodel.

ATVstandsforal-terainvehicle.AnATVisasmal,specializedpieceofmobile
equipment hatisdesignedforuseonrough,unpavedground.Theoperatorsits
onasad le-likeseat,andste rswithhandlebars(unlikemostothersmal vehicles,
whichhavechairorbench-typeseats,andarecontroledwithaste ringwhe l).
TheATVhasfourlargebalo n-liketires,withverylowairpres ure.
Mostimportant,theATVisdesignedtobe“driver-active.”Ona“driver-active”vehicle
likeanATV(oramotorcycleorsnowmobile),theoperator’sbodymovementshelp
controltheATV.Driver-activevehiclesrequireastrongcombinationofskil,go d
judgement,atention,andphysicalstrength.

Thisbo kletexplainshowtosafelyuseanATVonyourfarm,ranch,ororchard.
However,thisbo kletcan otsubstiuteforago dcourseonbasicATVoperation.
Thesecoursesareinexpensive,andincludehands-onexperience.Manyare
specialydesignedforyoungpeople.FARSHAstronglyrecommendsthateveryone
whomayoperatetheATVtakeoneofthesecourses.InmostregionsofOntario,
ATVtrainingcoursesareregularlyoferedthroughtheOntarioFederationofAl
TerainVehicleClubs
WitheveryoneproperlytrainedinbasicATVoperation,youmaywishtouse
thisbo kletasaguidelinefordiscus ionswithfamilymembers,aswel ashired
workers.Therewil certainlybetopicsinthisbo klet hatyouhavenotconsidered,
andyoumayimprovesomeoperatingproceduresbyfolowingthesug estionsin
