BRIEF SUMMARY OF COMMUNITY STANDARDS WITHIN
GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES
As you know, living in College is an exciting and stimulating experience. It can also be challenging as life in a community
inevitably means that you must modify your behaviour so it will not negatively impact on those who live and learn around
you. When you are considerate of others there will be few, if any, problems between fellow College members that cannot
be solved amicably.
The imposition of rules and regulations within the Colleges has been minimised deliberately. This is because we believe
that if members are mindful that consideration for others is the fundamental and guiding principle of community living, it
will result in sensible and responsible behaviour.
Experience has shown that there are a number of areas that warrant special mention, some of which are detailed below. A
comprehensive list of policies and procedures are outlined in the Community Standards document that is attached and also
available on web site, www.griffith.edu.au/accommodation
As a member of a College your prime responsibility is to conduct yourself as a person who cares about fellow members.
In practical terms this means that you must:
be mindful of how the noise you generate impacts on your neighbours and act accordingly;
ensure that your consumption of alcoholic beverages is in a moderate and sensible manner;
accept individual and collective financial responsibility for any damage to College property;
for security reasons obtain permission for overnight guests;
not use or possess illegal drugs and other substances; and
solve any interpersonal difficulties that might arise without resorting to physical or verbal aggression or intimidation.
Penalties for late payment of fees
A weekly charge of $20.00 for non-payment of fees by the due date will apply until such time as the account is no longer
Any College member who has outstanding accounts will not be allowed to continue their residency without the full
payment of overdue accounts, Academic results will be withheld and re-enrolment prevented.
Vacating the Colleges
If you wish to terminate your residency, you must lodge a Notice to Terminate Residency form four (4) weeks prior to
Please note that if you leave College before the end of semester, you will be charged an “Early Termination Fee”
of $330 (gst incl).
Semester Breaks (Conference Bookings)
The Colleges subsidise student rentals by offering rooms and facilities to outside groups for conferences or other
A number of conferences have been confirmed for June/July 2011. You will be required to relocate during this period.
We will provide further advice early in Semester 1 2011.
