Wrongly opposed to black women white men dating
"I have about five Black friends who date outside of their race," said actress Regina
King last year. "But all the other friends of mine, it's either they vocally say that they
won't or every time an opportunity comes up for them to date outside of their race,
there's some excuse why it's not going to work. It'll be more like, `Well, you know
he works at such and such, and our schedules don't match.' But we'll know really
what it is. It's 'cause he's white."
If you look at black women white men dating, this is what the situation is like: just a
few doing it; others looking for every excuse in the book not to do it when an eligible
white man comes their way. Looking at America today and the melting pot that we are
and the racial diversity of this country, it makes sense to find more black women white
men unions but somehow there is still a tinge of racism that still faults this melting pot
we like to think we are living in. It's like race and race issues seem to be driving force
behind who we date and why we date the way we do.
A black woman meets a young and successful white man who has all the qualities any
woman looks for in her dream man. And to add onto this, there is mutual chemistry. So
why doesn't she date him? Why does she run the minute he suggests he wants a
committed relationship? Because she doesn't think White men understand Black culture.
Because she has always pictured her kids to be black. Because of slavery... All these are
the wrong reasons to shy away from black women white men relationships. Fear of
rejection and discrimination from family and friends still reign supreme. But this is also a
wrong way of looking at it.
How long are we going to let ourselves be the puppets of those around us that feel black
women white men dating are wrong? How long are we going to let our parents tell us to
stand by men of our race - while all the while, they are among the leading groups of
people in interracial marriages? See, the black man makes his dating choices regardless
of whether society likes it or not. And I think its high time black women did the same; be
selfish to their dating needs; date men who they want to date - not the men they are
expected or required to date.
