Document Description
CBSE syllabus would be introduced in science stream (physics, chemistry, maths, biology) in Pre- University Course (PUC) in Karnataka from the next academic year, Primary and Second Education Minister, Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, said today. First year PUC students (11th standard) would have CBSE syllabus from 2012-13 and continue with it next year (12th standard). Those who are in second PUC (12th standard) next year (2012-13) would, however, have state syllabus, he told reporters here. “The aim is to see that the students are able to compete in all-India exams effectively,” the Minister said. Bridge course would be conducted after SSLC (10th standard) as students are bound to face some hardship and pressure while switching over to the CBSE syllabus, Kageri said, adding, teachers would also be trained in the process. Fifth and 8th standard students would have new text books from the coming academic year (2012-13), while the remaining standards would have new books from 2013-14, he said. Course materials on the lines of CBSE are being finalised by resource persons as per the National Curriculum Framework 2005, the Minister said, adding extensive consultations had been held with former education ministers, experts and NGOs on updating content in tune with present times. Meanwhile, Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said said the Government would open a security press at Peenya here in the next financial year.

The state government has decided to upgrade the syllabus for pre-university and school
education to make it on a par with the Central Board of Secondary Education syllabus in
central schools. This follows the Union government's decision to introduce national common
entrance tests for medical, engineering and other professional courses.
The syl abus for the PU first-year course in science wil be upgraded to CBSE level from the
coming academic year (2012-13). The syllabus for classes V and VIII wil also be raised to
CBSE standards from 2012-13. The upgrade would be extended from Class I to Class X from
2013-14, said primary and secondary education minister Visveshwara Hegde Kageri.
A bridge course wil be conducted for those who pass SSLC this year, to equip them to cope
with the CBSE syl abus in first-year PU from the next academic year. PU teachers too will
receive special training to prepare them to teach the new syllabus.
The decision comes after the Karnataka government accepted the proposed common
National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to medical courses in government and
private col eges throughout India from 2014.
Over 1.56 lakh science-stream students appear for the Common Entrance Test in the state. Of
these, more than 90 per cent students study the state syllabus; only about 4,000 study the
CBSE or Indian School Certificate syl abus.
The state government wants to ensure that the curriculum in state schools and PU col eges is
brought on a par with the central syl abus before national-level common entrance tests are
introduced.
