The unemployed are forced to work for Poundland for 4 weeks - in what the
Con-Dem government call the Mandatory Work Activity (MWA) scheme -
in return for their benefits. Based on a 35-hour week that works out at
1.93 @ hour!
Poundland does not a pay a penny - not even their travel expenses or
lunch money. Poundland get free labour, increased profits and you -
the taxpayer - pay the bill.
HOW DOES THIS TAXPAYER SCAM WORK?
The jobcentre sends the unemployed to providers like Ingeus and
JHP Group. When the provider has secured a unpaid work placement
for the unemployed at Poundland, the provider is paid a fee. And that
fee comes from your taxes!
Poundland, which saw profits rise from 15.3m in 2008 to 30.1m in
2010, is majority owned by private US equity company Warburg Pincus.
Wouldn't you rather see your taxes going towards building more schools
and hospitals instead of increasing the profits of Poundland who exploit
both the unemployed and the taxpayer?
