Get to Know the Ovary

As was taught in your Science subject, there is a set of ovaries (two to be exact) in every
woman's body. They are an important aspect of the female reproductive system. They
produce estrogen, the female hormones, which trigger menstruation. They also produce an
egg each month within the menstruation cycle to make fertilization possible.

The ovaries are found at the lower abdomen. If there is something wrong with one or both,
you will feel the pain below your belly button up to the part where your pelvis is. So take note
of any discomfort and make sure to have yourself checked immediately.

The Common Causes of Ovarian Pain

Pain in your lower abdomen can be brought about by many circumstances and conditions. It
could occur because of the existence of tumors or cysts or any kind of mass that, if left
unchecked and untreated, could lead to more serious health problems.

What causes ovarian cysts? Ovarian cysts commonly occur in women during their child-
bearing years. Sometimes, the mass that is filled with fluid forms during the process of
ovulation. Sometimes, they form because the sac holding the egg did not dissolve after the
egg was released.

Most cases of ovarian cysts do not cause any form of discomfort other than a sharp pain that
can be felt in your lower abdomen. You must, therefore, never take for granted any ovarian
pain, whether it is mild or severe.

Aside from ovarian pain, there are other symptoms that may come with it. However, they may
not be recognizable or may even be absent during the early days of the cyst's existence. The
other symptoms include pain during intercourse, pain during bowel movement, irregular
menstruation, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and feeling full even after eating just a small meal.

If you suspect that your ovarian pain is not a simple pain, consult your OB-Gyne immediately.
Your doctor will let you through certain tests to check if there is indeed mass present in your
ovary. As soon as the problem is established, your doctor will be able to figure out what kind
of treatment is right for you.
