Don't buy cheap furniture, instead go to second hand stores, flea markets, antique and junk
stores and buy quality pieces. A lot of people these days are following the trend of
purchasing re-usable products.
Stores like Restores for Habitat for Humanity have become popular. They are the new
favorite stores of today for finding bargains. Not only are you finding a bargain for yourself
but also helping a good cause.
Second hand stores are a good way to purchase quality furniture at cheap prices. The down
side is, more than likely the used furniture you purchase will need a little work. Don't let
this stop you, you don't have to have nightmares of stripping, sanding and staining.
Buying antique and vintage furniture has become a big trend with today's modern style of
decorating. The rule of not painting antique furniture has been broken, colorful pieces are
popping up all over the place and look great with any decor.
The natural wood of furniture is beautiful, but painting the piece will not ruin the quality,
great lines or uniqueness of the piece.
Paints have improved and make painting techniques easier. Spray paints have come a long
way, it's not just the basic colors any more. You can now achieve a hammered look of
copper and silver with spray paint. There are also glazes in different colors to place over top
of paint for a more aged look.
Sometimes a simple cleaning and polishing is all that is needed to improve the look of used
furniture. Also, changing hardware such as new hinges, handles or knobs can make a
dramatic difference.
Second hand stores are not just limited to furniture. You will find a lot of products for your
home decorating needs. If you want to save what's in your wallet, than it's definitely worth
checking out.
Be careful when purchasing upholstered furniture, stains and smells are hard to remove. If
you want to try your hand at upholstering, than this is a good way to start.
I have found a lot of glass pieces very inexpensively at Goodwill and Restores. One of my
favorites is a very large glass hurricane globe I bought for $3, they sell for $60 new. I like
to use the globe for the holiday decorating and fill it with pine cones, gourds, colorful leaves
or ornaments.
Don't forget about holiday decorations. Last Year I found an old metal 4 foot tall metal
snowman at Goodwill. I spray painted the snowman with hammered copper spray paint and
placed him on our front door.
If you are updating your bathroom or kitchen look at second hand stores for sinks, faucets,
cabinets and other products that you may need for the update. I saw a picture of an old
style sink that was placed on top of a vanity and it looked amazing. It mimicked the look of

a large sink bowl that sits on top of a vanity. The look was completed with a newer faucet
that had vintage charm.
