Choosing the ideal Lamp Shades that match your
room
There are so many types of lampshades to choose from that you may feel overcome by the undertaking
of choosing a shade. But if you learn about the various ones before you start hunting through
catalogues, you might be able to limit your search to the best styles and save yourself some time.
For instance, it might be good to first narrow the lampshades down by learning what kinds are suited to
the decor of the room the lamp will be in. For a conventional look, you'll want to contemplate acquiring
a conical shade; for a more current look, a drum shade.
There are other concerns that will focalize your choices. For a desk lamp, for example, a lamp shade
should never extend past the perimeter of a table. If the lamp will be near a television set, an opaque
lampshade of any material will minimize glare. If you'd like to have a warm glow emitting from your
lamp, choose a lampshade made of semi-opaque paper or fabric.
Space doesn't permit us to cover anywhere near all of the types of lampshades. Here are some varieties
of lampshades to get you started, beginning with the fundamental shapes:
Drum and Cylinder Shades
These two kinds of round lampshades generally have vertical or near-vertical sides; the difference
between them is mainly in their proportions. Drum shades are normally wider and cylinder shades are
usually taller. Drums lampshades are probably the safest of all shapes in terms of fire danger, because
the bulb is located quite a ways from the shade.
Floor, Empire and Coolie Shades
These three circular kinds have loped sides of varying degrees. Floor shades feature sides that are
almost as steep as drum or cylinder shades. Empire shades offer a medium slope and are well-
proportioned for reading lamps. Coolie shades feature the most gradual slope, having a smaller top
diameter and a bigger base. Coolie shades are really close to the bulb.

Oriental-inspired Shades
There are many types of oriental-inspired lampshades. Probably the most common one is the paper ball
shade with either Japanese or Chinese writing on it. Other examples are the Puggi and the Shoji lamps.
Leather and Rawhide Shades
These two kinds of fabric lampshades lend a western, earthy or rustic look to your lamp. Rawhide
shades are a lot like their leather cousins, but rawhide isn't exposed to the tanning process that leather
goes through. For this reason, rawhide is tough and almost clear, and can be stretched out (when wet)
into any form desired.
Tiffany bedside lamps are built of hand-rolled stained art glass, and they are what characterize Tiffany
lamps. Light that gets filtered through these elegant lamps is breath-taking. There might be bubbles,
lines and/or seeds observed in the glass, but they aren't defects; they show the design and grace of
authentic stained art glass. The numerous subtle shadings of the glass exhibit the uniqueness of every
Tiffany lamp.
Mica Shades
Mica is a layered mineral that easily separates into very thin clear sheets. Its colours vary from yellow to
green, black or pale brown. Light filtering through a mica lamp shade hypnotizes you with its mystic
look.
