August CompassPoint Newsletter
Hi everyone! Kavya and I welcome you to the August edition of CompassPoint's monthly newsletter.
In this newsletter, we will be updating you with information regarding the latest happenings at
CompassPoint as well as various articles, posts and websites that mentors and mentees can both
benefit from. As always, please let us know if you have any ideas on how to improve CompassPoint
(we won't bite, we promise).
It Just Keeps on Growing!
CompassPoint would like to thank the following individuals for reaching out to us and wanting to
start their own branch of CompassPoint:
Jack Ngo (University of San Francisco '13) - Jack will be joining Raymond Wong (UC Berkeley '14)
as one of the branch leaders at Independence High.
Kasey Ong (University of California Los Angelas '15) - Kasey wishes to begin a branch at Piedmont
Hills High School. Rock on Kasey!
Kevin Chen (University of California, Berkeley '15) - Kevin is interested in starting a branch of
CompassPoint at Fremont High!
We would like to thank these talented individuals for taking their time and effort to try and better the
communities they came from.
A New Program - Mentor Spotlight
CompassPoint Mentorship will also be starting a new program called Mentor Spotlight that allows
showcases the skills and passions of all the mentors around the country! We have already
spotlighted two mentors: Narayan Subramanian (Columbia '13) and Betsy Tsai (UCLA '14). You can
read the questions that were asked and the responses given by these mentors on our blog:
blog.cpmentorship.com
Furthermore, you can ask questions for the new Mentor we are spotlighting--Poolesville High
School's Kevin Connor! You can read his vast array of accomplishments and talents as well as ask
him questions by visiting this link: Mentor Spotlight - Kevin Connor
August Enlightening Articles
[In this section we will feature articles submitted by various mentors and mentees that are
interesting, thought-provoking, enlightening or all of the above! If you have an article that you come
across that you'd like to share, please email us at info [at] cpmentorship [dot] com!]
1. Six Habits of Highly Effective Mentees by entrepreneur Ben Casnocha
Mentor Carl Shan writes: "This is a great blog post by Ben Casnocha regarding what mentees
need to do in order to make their relationship with their mentor a fulfilling one. It's a two-way street--
if you want to get a lot from your mentor you have to be ready to give a lot. That means giving your
attention, your opinions and your effort. It's not a pump-and-dump relationship where all you are
trying to do is extract as much from your mentor as possible. Show a genuine interest in his or her

life and philosophies. It'd go a long way.
I'd recommend this as a read to any mentee who wants more out of their relationship with their
CompassPoint Mentor."
2. Like or Love
Mentee Karthika Pai writes: "This is quite an interesting (and old) article by Jonathan Franzen,
author of Freedom. I think it is relevent especially with the advent of Google+ and other services
technology gives us. Franzen encourages to "go out there", not just Like something but love it, even
when loving something or someone gives them the potential to destry us (unlike Blackberrys and
other devices)."
3. A Few Tips about College Apps
Mentee Karthika Pai writes: "You might have seen a load of articles on the internet for the Class of
2016, but this one is especially striking because it was the first article that I read on college apps
that left me not only less nervous than I was before but also excited about the adventure ahead. It
offers great guidelines that most high-schoolers (especially in this area) might not feel motivated to
do (such as taking the SAT three times to get a perfect score)."
4. Obama College Round Table
Mentee Sandeep Peddada writes: "[This] is a video link of a roundtable that President Obama had
with a few polisci college students on the importance of compromise in politics.
What I think can be gained out of this video is an understanding that compromise is the key to
success, not only in politics, but in any discipline. As Obama says in the video, "the nature of our
democracy and the nature of our politics is to marry principle to a political process that means you
don't get 100% of what you want." And as he further explains, there will always be people pushing
on both sides of the issue, so for anything constructive to happen, one side or both may have to
give in a little. I think this is applicable to many situations that each of us will face at some point or
another in our future careers, etc."
5. Gmail Plugin: Boomerrang
Mentor Kavya Shankar writes: "Featured Technology App: Boomerang
(http://www.boomeranggmail.com/)
With boomerang, choose when you send your emails, when you want to follow up, and be
reminded if you don't hear back from the email recipient! It's the best way to maximize on
productivity regarding emails as well as ensure that you are hearing back from people that you
need responses from."
A Quote a Day...
[In this section we will feature one meaningful quote for the soul...If you have a favorite quote
that you'd like to share, feel free to email it to us!]
"A human being should be able to change a
diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a
ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance
accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the
dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act
alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem,
pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty
meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
Specialization is for insects."
- Robert A. Heinlein
