Consulate in India Consolidates Blanket L Visa Processing to
Chennai
Houston, TX (Law Firm Newswire) December 8, 2011 - The U.S. Consulate General in India recently
centralized its blanket L category visa processing center in Chennai on the country's southwestern coast.
Blanket L visas are given to executives, specialized professionals or managers who are transferring within a
company, according to a release from the Consulate General. Now, companies in India will have to send all of
their Blanket L applicants to Chennai for interviews.
"Blanket L visas in India can now only be processed in Chennai," said Houston immigration lawyer Annie
Banerjee. "Since Chennai has the honor of being the post with the highest rate of rejection in the world, I am
wondering if the rejection rates of Blanket Ls will be high."
The Consulate's release said the change was made to streamline the issuance process. Spouses and children
of L1 visa holders will not be affected and individual visa holders still can be processed at other consular
sections in India.
"I hope that streamlining the process means making it easier for companies to transfer some of their skilled
laborers to the United States," Banerjee said. "We need it to be easier for companies to do good work in this
country. And if companies need to transfer some of their employees from India to Houston or Silicon Valley in
order to grow their company, then our country needs to make it easy for them to do that."
Laws and policies for visa processing in India have not changed, according to the release.
