WHAT IS CPR?
CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an
emergency procedure performed on a victim
suffering from cardiac arrest or respiration
arrest. It is performed in hospitals and outside.
CPR helps revive the victim by applying chest
compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing in
a specific order to intervene and create an
artificial circulation of blood and air.

CPR(cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

Such a procedure is only allowed to be performed after
CPR training. People who have not had a proper tutor in
CPR methods, should only use Hands-only CPR for reviving
a victim. You will know how to perform Hands-only CPR in
the following text.

The first thing done before performing CPR is to make sure
the victim is unconscious due to a cardiac arrest or has just
fainted for other reasons. Try to wake the person up by
rubbing your knuckles on the victim’s sternum. If this does
not wake the victim, call 911 and proceed to the next step
of CPR. The CPR procedure is not necessary if the victim
wakes up, moves or groans.

CPR(cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

Once you are sure that the victim is not waking up, start
the rescue breathing. Make sure the victim is lying on his
back. Tilt his/her head by the chin-lift method. Put your
ears to the victim’s mouth to ensure that he is breathing.
Look for chest movement, listen to the airflow in his/her
nose and mouth. If there is no airflow, pinch the victim’s
nose, take a long breath, and exhale into the victim’s
mouth, until you see the victim’s chest rise. Repeat this
procedure after the chest falls back. This is done only two
times whether it works or not.

If there is still no breathing, after the mouth-to-mouth,
start with the chest compressions. For people who are
untrained in CPR can perform only these chest
compressions, also called as Hands-only. Place the heel of
your hand in the middle of the victim’s chest, with your
other hand placed on the first; compress the chest about
two inches. Perform 30 compressions at a 100/minute
rate.

CPR(cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

Again give the two
rescue breaths, do not
check for breathing
this time. CPR steps
are alternated for
about 2-3 minutes.
You have to keep
doing this until the
help arrives.
