Dallas City, Texas

Its Journey To Turn
Into

Dallas is the third biggest city in Texas and one of the biggest in
continental US. The city forms part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex,
which is the 4th largest in the US. These days, Dallas is ranked as an
Alpha World City with very sophisticated and diversified industries,
especially, banking, telecommunications, medical research, transportation
and logistics. A large percentage of Fortune 500 companies also call Dallas
Home. Worldwide, Dallas also is number 14 in terms of GDP.

The area of present-day Dallas was not uninhabited when Europeans set
foot there in the 16th century. In fact, when they arrived, there are several
villages of Caddo Native Americans along the coast. They were organized
into several villages, often associating with other tribes in the region. Texas
became a Spanish colony in the 1700s and this region was called New
Spain. Texas was a part of the Spanish colony until Mexico won its
independence in 1821 after a decade-long war. Texas was under the
Mexican Empire from 1821 to 1836.

Texas eventually separated from Mexico and turned
into Republic of Texas, and it remained an independent
nation for almost a decade. Today, the Hispanic culture
is still very much felt. According to the 2010 census,
around 20% of the population is of Hispanic heritage,
with around 70% of that cohort of Mexican origin. Dallas
has also become a major destination for Mexican
immigrants, both legally and illegally. The Mexican
culture is very pervasive in this part of Texas, even in
terms of cuisine. Proof of this is the popularity of Tex-
Mex dishes.

The city grew slowly but steadily in the 1870s. Several
developments in the area effectively transformed Dallas
from a center of farming and ranching into a major, self-
sustaining industrial city. It was also a railway
intersection, which further contributed to its growth as a trading hub for raw
materials such as grains and cotton. The accessibility to railroads also
contributed to the population growth in Texas.

In 1873, the population of Dallas shot up from 3,000 to 7,000 from January

to September. With this massive population growth also meant construction
of new buildings and other infrastructures, and the rise of new businesses.
Dallas experienced great growth when oil was discovered near Kilgore. In
the 1980s, Dallas experienced a real estate boom both in residential and
commercial sectors. Today, Dallas has become not only an agricultural
center, but also as centers of banking, insurance, fashion retailing, and
several other businesses.
