Drink and Food Allergic Reactions and Intolerances

Foods are a necessity, nevertheless some of us can develop an intolerance or sensitivity to
particular types of food. It is possible to be sensitized to all sorts of food although it's more
common to have an allergic reaction of some kind to things like nuts, shellfish and milk. An allergic
reaction to a certain food could inflame the body's tissues and in some circumstances could be
critical. Having an intolerance to some foods is very different to having an allergy but both induce
their own specific signs and symptoms.

Many people avoid eating specific foods incorrectly believing that they're hypersensitive to them.
Records show that between 5 and 8 children and 1 or 2 adults in every 100 have an allergic
reaction, establishing that they are relatively rare and mostly run in families. If you ever think you
have a food sensitivity then it's best to pay a visit to a doctor before making changes to your diet
regime.

As mentioned before, it is possible to be hypersensitive to all kinds of food and drink, however the
following list of foods, also called allergens, are those most certainly to set off an allergic reaction:
shellfish; fish; soya beans; milk; peanuts; eggs; wheat; tree nuts (e.g almonds, walnuts) and fruit
and veg.

The type of reaction you could go through can contrast greatly and could start directly after eating
or a few hours later. Many of the symptoms you could go through with a food allergy are: vomiting
and diarrhoea; headaches; breathing problems; skin rash; swelling of face or throat.

Symptoms might be minimal one day and serious the next. It's because your system has become
sensitised to the food. Having an allergic reaction or intolerance to food and drink is something
that other people need to be aware of too, particularly if you often eat out as you do not want to be
placing yourself at risk. By way of example, eating a small amount of the food will set off an
anaphylactic shock, which is a critical reaction and calls for an on the spot injection of adrenaline.

So how do you determine if you have a food allergy or not? Clearly a visit to the GP is necessary
and the extent of his examination can rely on how severe your symptoms have been, but can
include a variety of blood and skin tests and an eating programme intended to pinpoint the actual
foods causing the reactions.

Complementary treatments are to be had for testing for food and drink allergies by making use of
methods, such as kinesiology and hair analysis, but these aren't scientifically validated nor
accurate. The perfect and most important remedy for any food allergy is basically to stop eating it
altogether!

If after all this it's discovered that you do not have a food allergy but you're still not able to digest
specific types of food then it's a possibility you might have to consider things like celiac disease,
minor food poisoning or crohn's disease.

For most food is a friend whilst to others it is an enemy. Ill-timed cravings when dieting is a key
challenge for most of us specially when our favourite food and drink are being turned into mortal
sins. For a lot of us food and drink books can assist us to manage our allergies successfully.

Most people with food allergies can live a normal life with just a few limitations in their diet regime
and although it's possible to suffer certain problems like anaemia and breathing problems, they're
uncommon.
