by the betrothed person during the period from betrothal to marriage. At present
about all over the world the ring made of different metals is used by some
persons regularly. The purposes of this usage are different. Some people

that between the betrothal and marriage a gap must be there. As per this
announcement the duration was not limited to any particular time. The number
of the days could be varied. The people regarded the advice of the Pope and,
practice started and up til now prevailed very much. This practice has become
so popular with the passage of time. Some marriages also take place
immediately after the betrothal but due to the popularity and commonness of the
interval between both the occasions, such marriage is not liked by the people.
Such marriage is known as an emergent marriage due to some unavoidable
circumstances.

symbol for that and it was the reason that the usage of a ring was suggested
and adopted by the people. Initially the engagement ring was given from a man
to woman and a woman wearing this ring was considered willing for marry to

take of the ring from both the parties came into practice and became so popular
that now all over the world this practice is prevailing. In the start of usage of
engagement ring, after marriage it was necessarily removed by the person but
later on its usage even after marriage was not considered a strange.

there. Initially gold was not considered essential for the engagement ring. Some

other metals like silver and bronze were also used for this purpose but now the
gold is regarded essential. Some engagement rings are completely golden and
some are designed and decorated with different beautiful and shining stones.
The rings made of gold and highest priced diamonds are also used as
engagement rings.
At the time when the engagement ring came into use, no hand (left or right) and
no finger was specified for its usage. In different areas of the world it was used
in different fingers. But slow and steady all over the world the finger between the
little and middle finger was specified for wearing an engagement and other
rings. This practice became so popular that this finger was named as ring finger.
As per the structure of human body as compared to other fingers the ring finger
is closest to the artery going to the heart, therefore, the engagement ring is
supposed to wear on this finger necessarily.
