Fun Fest 2010, Let the Reading Begin! Since 2005, Family Fun Fest is an annual event that aims to get young children on the path in being prepared for school. Over the last four years, Fun Fest has grown from 300 attending in 2005 to 1,000 last year. Over 25 agencies and community organizations have provided parents with information on the importance of early childhood, early literacy and modeled what they can do to help their children be ready for school. Most impressively is the over 150 volunteers that contribute to the planning and/or implementation of the events. Previously, the event has been on two weekends in the month of April; one at Beach Elementary School, located at the north end of the county and the second at Patuxent Elementary School in the southern end of the county. This year we will mobilize resources into one central location at Barstow Elementary School in Prince Frederick on Saturday, April 17th. The theme is Fun Fest 2010, Let the Reading Begin! The emphasis will be on reading and literacy, therefore we are distributing one book to each of the first 500 families with young children. The Learning Zones will be an interactive activity, based on a children’s book, which covers one of the domains of learning. There will be facilitators from core agencies that will assist parents as they work and complete the activity with their young child. Other volunteers will be used to greet, assist, and stamp each Passport to Learning booklet upon completion. Local agencies and organizations will line the halls for participants to get beneficial information on county programs and businesses. It is planned to have volunteers in each area to do face painting as well as other festive and fun activities as they enjoy completing the passport.
