Flood Relief Appeal
BATTICALOA a place cal ed Land of Singing Fish where honey and milk float. It was cherished such,
people from al walks of life local or from other areas lead a happy and prosperous life.
The question now is that had Batticaloa been cursed? The Cyclone of November 23rd, 1978; the ethnic
conflict erupted like a volcano since 1983 prolonged til 2009, the Tsunami on 26th December 2004 and
now the Extreme Flood Condition. There is no mercy left to the people of Batticaloa to develop and
sustain themselves for their past glory. The slippery development attempts has inevitabl y made the
people of Batticaloa vulnerable and hanging on to donor supports.
We are looking forward to your generous financial assistance for relief, rehabilitation and development
of the flood affected people in the Batticaloa area. The extreme weather condition since mid December
2010 had severely affected the people and the YMCA. The extreme weather condition experienced in
several other parts of Sri Lanka but the Batticaloa is the worst affected.
Batticaloa YMCA is in its 40th anniversary this year and carries out several humanitarian activities such as
fol ows;
1. Livelihood assistance through micro-credit scheme about 3500 beneficiaries.
2. School for deaf children from backward and poor families – 71 children.
3. Capacity building war and tsunami affected children through CRC awareness.
4. Leadership development for vil age youth.
5. Running a guest house and auditorium.
6. Housing for tsunami and war affected families.
We are in need of financial support to re-start the activities and to support the people affected by the
flood. The long-term development such as economic, health and education recoveries are most
