Introduction
You should have good knowledge in DOS (prompt). Before u start, I
advices U 2 have practices all the DOS Commands (Internal & External
command’s) , So that u will feel bit comfortable while taking the following
step…
As it deal with computer hard disk (memory) U must take care of some
point about Disk like its type (FAT/NTFS) and also the operating system U R
using.
For new learner please go through the Dos-commands, which will help u
to learn more and make u to feel that DOS is foundation of windows OS
and u can do anything u want to do just U have to do is that put u’r brain
in use all the time .
Before I continue I like to give some important information about DOS
environment and its type of file system on which its run. So that u can
understand how DOS work, making u more skilled DOS user. This section
includes information about:
• System control programs
• Internal and external commands
• DOS program summary
• Device Designations(or names)
Let read the above point in detail….
System control programs
There are mainly 4 types essential programs associated with
the control of U computer and its interaction: 1) programs; 2) keyboard
& display screen; & attached devices like disk drive (CD/DVD, Hard
Disk) printers, & modems. These are:
• Boot Record
• BIO.COM
• DOS.COM

• COMMAND.COM


Boot Record
It helps to start U’r system by loading the operating system into U’r
computer memory. This includes reading the boot record into memory,
which passes control to DOS. Which later check for the presences of
BIO.COM & DOS.COM.
BIO.COM
It checks other input/output devices are loaded to memory (ROM). It also includes and controls
external hard disks, serial communications (joy stick, mouse, USB key board, pen drive etc.), it
final task is taken to performed by BIO.COM is load the command processor program
(COMMAND.COM). BIO.COM is programmed by the manufacturer of u’r computer system.
DOS.COM program
It act like bridge between applications programs and BIO.COM, as it intercepts
program calls for printing, data storage or retrieve etc.
FOR U HELP I HAVE TRY TO PROVIDE U SOME DOS COMMAND’S.
COMMAND.COM program
It helps to read commands from keyboard and executes command file.
These filename are AUTOEXEC.BAT, .COM and .EXE extensions.
DOS PROGRAM SUMMARY
DOS commands have added many more new commands as time pass DOS has come with new version
with latest feature. I have tried to bring some of the version. Through this table
Command Ver Description
Anti-virus 6.00 Detect and clean virus from memory and files.
Assign 2+ Reassign the specified disk drive designations.
BREAK 2+ Instructs DOS to check for a Ctrl- Break from the keyboard during program .
ON/OFF
CHLDSK 1.+ Check disk space, showing space occupied by file and space remaining 4 use.
CTTY 2.+ Assigns console control to a remote device.
DSLSPACE 6.00 Compress files to increase available disk space.
VSAFE 6.00 Load anti-virus monitor in2 memory 2 prevent infected file from being copied.
