Is Your Cell Phone Safe?
The potential harmful side effects of cell phone radiation are still being investigated by experts, but
some of the available evidence so far merit everyone's attention. It takes decades for cancer to develop,
for example, and it will be a while before there is definite consensus as to whether or not the cell phone
is safe to use.
A Yale School of Medicine research study found behavioral problems in offspring of mice subjected to
mobile phone radiation while being pregnant. Dr Hugh Taylor and his research team wanted to find out
what occurs to mice whose mothers were subjected during pregnancy to cellular phone radio
frequencies. The control group had a cell phone on top of the cage that was switched off, while the
experimental group had a mobile phone on top of the cage that was turned on. Mice that were born
from the experimental group displayed behavioral anomalies, the investigation found. The mice were
hyperactive and running around the cage more than the control group's offspring. It was also noted that
the more time the pregnant mice were exposed to the cellular phone frequencies, the more behavioral
problems were displayed by the offspring. The researchers cautioned that more studies are required
before making any consclusions with regards to pregrant humans.
In view of the possible health threats posed by the mobile phone usage, the Indian government has
instructed phone manufacturers to reference the radiation ratings of their phones by September 2012.
The radiation level is measured in terms of Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and is a measure at which
energy is absorbed by the body when exposed to the radio waves. People should become informed of
the many studies that suggest potential risks.
Research tests performed in the last 10 years have linked cellular phone radiofrequency radiation with
elevated danger of contracting brain and salivary gland tumor cells, nervous system conditions including
vertigo and migraine headaches, and developmental issues identified as behavioral difficulties in
children The National Research Council has stated that exposure to cellular phone microwave radiation
may impact the nervous, immune and endocrine systems, development of the unborn infant and
general metabolic process. Small children are more likely to be more sensitive compared with grownups
to effects from mobile phone radiofrequency signals, given that the brain of a young child is still at a
developing stage and his or her nervous tissues absorb a bigger percentage of microwave radiation
when compared to an adult's.
In a 2005 study carried out by a group of scientists from Israel, a plausible relationship between
radiofrequency radiation, identical to the kind present in mobile phones, and distinct forms of damage
to the eyes was observed. One type of damage appears to increase progressively and not mend, in
conflict the normal opinion and leading the researchers to claim that the period of exposure is nearly as
important as the strength of the irradiation. The experts additionally pointed out that present exposure
guidelines for microwave frequency radiation should be adjusted. The fundamental inspiration for this
particular investigation emerged following World War 2 when it was believed that radar operators
experienced a higher threat of forming cataracts. In additional existing reports on animals the effects of
microwave frequencies as a threat component for cataracts have been proven and have aided in
creating the guidelines established by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation
Protection (ICNIRP) in 1998. ICNIRP's primary goal is to distribute information and recommendations
concerning the possible health risks of non-ionizing radiation exposure
While there is still intense discussion as to whether cell phones can lead to cancer, there is adequate
data to show that it has at least some adverse biological effects. This is why health experts and
authorities have been giving recommendations for people to be more careful and mindful when using
their phones. To learn more about a variety of solutions that are available, check out Cellphone-
