John Diaz Offers Insight on New Text Book to be Released in November 2010

Beverly Hills, CA; September 15, 2010 - John Diaz recently collaborated with the editors of a
new textbook, scheduled for release in November of 2010. The book is titled the Encyclopedia of
Body Scultping After Massive Weight Loss and is edited by Dr. Berish Strauch and Dr. Charles
Herman.

John Diaz is a co-author of the chapter titled "Facial Rejuvenation: Indications and Analysis."
This chapter addresses the challenges plastic surgeons face when dealing with rejuvenating the
faces of patients who have lost significant amounts of weight.

Obesity is a major health problem in the United States with nearly 30% of the U.S. population
considered obese. Obesity increases the risk of hypertension, diabetes and a multitude of other
diseases. As a result, treatments for obesity have become extremely widespread and popular.

Gastric bypass and laparoscopic banding are two surgeries being performed in order to help
patients lose weight. These procedures result in massive weight loss and tremendous changes to
the body. Some patients are left with a significant amount of loose skin after these procedures.

As a result, plastic surgery body contouring procedures are growing in popularity. The
Encyclopedia of Body Sculpting After Massive Weight Loss was created to address this
emerging field. The chapter John Diaz co-authored was written to discuss the effects of weight
loss on the face.

John Diaz has a special interest in cosmetic surgery of the face. He performs a large number of
rhinoplasties and other facial cosmetic surgery procedures in his private practice. It is for this
reason he was approached to contribute to the textbook. The chapter he co-wrote is intended to

Facial cosmetic surgery in massive weight loss patients presents certain unique challenges.
Weight gain causes increased amounts of fat deposits in the face.

When this fat is lost, it results in deflation in certain areas of the face. This can create an aged
appearance that may not be improved with traditional techniques in surgery. Furthermore, many
of the weight loss patients develop medical problems and metabolic disturbances which may

The chapter addresses these issues and concerns. It offers recommendations on how to diagnose
these problems and provides guidance on how to manage some of these challenges. It is certain
that massive weight loss surgery will continue to be a major topic among surgeons throughout
the country. The goal of this chapter, and the textbook in general, is to provide a useful resource
for plastic surgeons caring for these patients.
