FADE IN:
INT. SCHOOL BUS - DAY
A group of high school students board the bus. JUDE, 16,
wearing glasses and a messenger bag, enters the bus last and
sits in an empty seat in the back. He listens to his music as
the other students chat with each other. As the bus starts
moving, Jude leans up against window to peer out at the
sunrise. He can tell that it had rained the night before.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. SCHOOL - DAY
The students pile out of the school bus as the bell rings.
Jude unfolds his schedule and glances at it.
JUDE
(Whispering) Room 231, English. Ms.
Brown, Room 231.
By now, nearly every student is in class. Jude walks into the
hallway and scans the doors for room numbers. He stops at the
door labeled "231", takes a deep breath, and enters.
INT. ROOM 231 - DAY
The scattered students talk to each other.
MS. BROWN
Class, settle down! Get into your
assigned seats or I'll have to mark
you absent.
As Jude walks in, the classroom becomes silent. All eyes turn
to him.
MS. BROWN (CONT'D)
I said get into your seats!
Jude watches as the students shift around the room into their
desks. Ms. Brown's attention goes back to the schedule, where
she signs the paper and hands it back to Jude.

2.
MS. BROWN
Okay, class! As you can see, we
have a new student! Everyone
welcome Mr. Jude Isaac!
The class was now at a whisper, and Jude shifted
uncomfortably on his feet.
MS. BROWN (CONT'D)
Ian, raise your hand, please.
IAN, 16, raises one hand nonchalantly. Ms. Brown points to
him in the back right corner of the room and turns to Jude.
MS. BROWN
You'll be sitting over there behind
Ian. He'll help you out if you have
any questions. Welcome to our
class, Jude.
JUDE
Thanks.
Jude takes a seat behind Ian. The students continue to
whisper.
MS. BROWN
Now, everyone open up to page 516
in the textbook.
The students groan simultaneously as they take out their
textbooks.
CUT TO:
INT. CAFETERIA - DAY
Jude pushes through the crowd of students in the cafeteria
and sits down at a secluded table. He pulls his notebook out
of his bag and draws.
CUT TO:
INT. ART CLASS - DAY
Jude is seated at a table in the corner of the room by the
desk of MR. KEATS, 31.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

3.
Ian sits quietly across the room from Jude. Jude sketches a
picture of the classroom. The bell rings and the students get
up to leave.
MR. KEATS
Jude, can you come here for a
second?
Jude turns and walks toward Mr. Keats, stopping at his desk.
Mr. Keats sits up tall in his chair and drops a pen on his
desk.
MR. KEATS (CONT'D)
I saw what you were sketching
earlier, and I thought I might tell
you that I'm truly impressed. Now I
don't want to keep you too long,
but I would like to welcome you to
my class, and I'm looking forward
to seeing more of your work.
JUDE
Thank you, Mr. Keats. I appreciate
it.
Jude and Mr. Keats smile and Jude turns around to leave.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. JUDE'S HOUSE - DAY
Jude sneaks into the front entry of the house and quietly
closes the door behind him. He begins to creep into his
bedroom when his mother, SHARON, 45, stops him.
SHARON
How was your first day, sweetie?
Jude sighs and turns around to face his mother.
JUDE
It was okay.
Sharon hugs Jude.
SHARON
Look, I know it's hard right now,
with everything going on right now.
But I promise, it will get better.
JUDE
That's what you always say.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

4.
Sharon kisses Jude's forehead. Jude walks to his bedroom and
closes the door behind him.
Jude drops his messenger bag to the floor, removes his shoes,
and collapses on his bed, where he sees only white walls and
cardboard boxes. He closes his eyes and falls fast asleep.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. ENGLISH CLASS - DAY
Jude sits in his assigned seat. The bell rings signalling the
beginning of the period, and the students socialize.
MS. BROWN
Quiet! Everybody in their seats! I
have a special project I have to
talk about today.
Everybody groans simultaneously.
MS. BROWN (CONT'D)
This will be a partner project, but
I will be choosing the partners
this time because we seemed to have
a little mishap last time.
Ms. Brown makes eye contact with KADEN, 16, and ERIC, 17, as
they smile and slap eachother high-fives. The class, with the
exception of Jude, laughs.
MS. BROWN (CONT'D)
Alright, alright, that's enough.
This project will be on a poem I
assign to your group, and it will
be due two weeks from now.
The class groans once more.
MS. BROWN (CONT'D)
You and your partner will memorize
your poem and then analyze it
verbally in front of the class. One
person can memorize it, and the
other can analyze, or you both can
break it up and do a little of
each.
Ms. Brown names off partners from a list.
MS. BROWN (CONT'D)
... And lastly, Ian and Jude will
be partners.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

5.
There is more laughter, and Ian scowls. He then puts on a
fake smile and turns around to Jude.
IAN
Nice to meet you, bro.
JUDE
Nice to meet you too.
Ian turns back around to his desk. Jude relaxes in his seat
and scratches his forearm casually. The students get into
groups. Ms. Brown walks around to each group with a bowl of
paper slips labeled with the poems they would be assigned.
MS. BROWN
And no trading poems! You get what
you get!
As Ms. Brown walks around the classroom, students draw poem
slips from out of her bowl. Some students are upset, while
others are clueless.
Ian draws "Lullaby" by W. H. Auden and turns to show Jude.
IAN
Do you know what this is about?
Jude shakes his head.
JUDE
I have no clue. Do you?
IAN
Nope! (Sarcastically) Well this
should be fun!
Jude slightly smiles.
IAN (CONT'D)
So we should exchange numbers so we
can meet up sometime this week.
Ian hands Jude his cellphone.
JUDE
Sure, when do you want to meet up?
Jude enters his phone number into Ian's phone.
IAN
How does tomorrow after school
sound?
Jude hands Ian his phone back.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

6.
JUDE
Depends, where at?
IAN
My place? I can drive us there.
JUDE
Sure, okay.
The bell rings, and the students pack up their belongings and
head out of class. Ian meets with Kaden and Eric before
leaving the room and Jude overhears them laughing at him.
KADEN
How did you get stuck with that
loser?
ERIC
Yeah, he looks like a real loner.
Looks like some art freak that was
dumped here.
The boys laugh and head into separate directions. Jude
pretends not to notice and takes an alternate route to his
next class.
CUT TO:
INT. CAFETERIA - DAY
Jude sits alone listening to his music at lunch and scans the
room for Ian, who is sitting at a large table with a group of
football players and a girl. Jude's eyes fix on Ian and watch
him kiss the girl. Jude turns his head and closes his eyes.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. ENGLISH CLASS - DAY
The bell rings. It is Wednesday. The students chat as usual
as Ian approaches Jude.
IAN
Hey man, do you want to meet me at
my car today after school?
JUDE
Sure, what does it look like?
IAN
It's a black 2010 Camaro.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

7.
JUDE
Alright, I'll be there.
The class gets settled. Jude writes something in his
notebook.
CUT TO:
EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT - DAY
After school, Jude walks through the parking lot and finds
Ian with his girlfriend kissing on his car. Ian sees Jude and
introduces him to SARA, 16.
IAN
Jude, this is Sara, my girlfriend.
Sara, this is Jude, my partner in
English.
SARA
(Waves) Nice to meet you, Jude!
JUDE
Nice to meet you too.
Sara turns to Ian and gives him a brief kiss.
IAN
See you later, babe.
INT. IAN'S CAR - AFTERNOON
Sara walks away and Ian gets into the driver's seat of the
car. Jude gets into the passenger's seat. Ian pulls out of
the parking lot and drives away. After a minute of silence,
Ian turns up the radio to hear the song "Welcome to the
Machine", by Pink Floyd.
IAN (CONT'D)
So what kind of music do you like,
Jude? Should I turn the station?
JUDE
Oh, you know, I like a little of
everything. And I think Pink Floyd
is awesome.
IAN
Are you serious? I fucking love
Pink Floyd! They're a timeless
classic.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

8.
JUDE
I agree with you completely. I have
one of their records somewhere.
IAN
Did you lose it?
JUDE
Oh, no. It's in one of the boxes in
my room, so I just have to unpack
it.
IAN
Oh yeah, you moved here recently!
From where?
JUDE
San Francisco.
Ian pulls up into his driveway and parks the car.
IAN
We're here!
INT. IAN'S HOUSE - DAY
Jude sees a beautiful contemporary mansion. Ian and Jude get
out of the car. Jude grabs his messenger bag and shuts the
car door. He follows Ian into the house.
INT. WARD HOUSE - DAY
Ian walks into the kitchen, and Jude follows. Ian opens the
refrigerator.
IAN
Thirsty? Do you drink?
Ian pulls out a can of beer.
JUDE
Not really. It's a school night
anyway.
IAN
C'mon live a little, you're with
me.
JUDE
Fine, I guess I could have one.
(c) Jude 2012 (Austin Wang & Jessie Menga)

9.
Ian smiles and tosses a can of beer to Jude. He grabs one for
himself and closes the refrigerator.
IAN
My parents won't get home until 8
because it's date night, and my
little sister is at her swim meet
so she won't get home until 8
either.
Jude follows Ian upstairs to his bedroom. Inside, he sees a
Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and a Queen poster.
JUDE
Nice room! I love your posters!
Three of my all-time favorite
bands!
IAN
Are you my twin or something?
Ian and Jude laugh. Ian sits on his bed and pats next to him.
IAN (CONT'D)
Come on, make yourself at home!
Jude sits down on the bed space next to Ian. Ian opens his
beer and takes a sip. Jude does the same.
IAN (CONT'D)
Okay, so what is the poem we're
supposed to be memorizing?
JUDE
Um let me see. (Digs into bag and
finds slip.) "Lullaby" by W. H.
Auden.
Ian gets up and sits at his desk. He places his beer on the
desk and looks up the poem on his computer.
IAN
Here it is! But what the fuck is it
about?
Jude gets up and looks over Ian's shoulder.
JUDE
I think it's about love and lust,
I'm not entirely sure, though.
