Document Description
Although it is often mistaken as mere tracing, to ink an image is not simply tracing the pencil drawings with a pen or brush. Rather, inking is done to strengthen lines, and to separate and define shapes in order to make the image better as well as making it easier to reproduce.

Glossary (continued)
Toning
Most manga are black and white, so tones and patterns are used to add texture, imply colours, and add shadows.
Here are some ways to tone your artwork:
1) Painting your art with ink diluted in water.
2) Using screen tones. Screen tones are stickers with printed patterns that you can cut out and stick on to
your art, or sheets with patterns that you can rub directly on to your art.
*Screen tones can be difficult to find in Canada.
3) Using a photo-manipulation or painting program such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter.
4) Software created specifically for manga creation such as Comicworks by Deleter, or Manga Studio by
E-Frontier have many fancy tones to add to your art.
Materials Needed:
1. Paper (8 ½ x 11) – As many sheets as needed.
2. Pencils and Erasers.
3. For inking, a Black Pen that is not a ballpoint pen.
4. A Ruler for drawing the frames, and other straight lines.

Before We Begin:
1. Make sure your group creates a cover page for your manga. Manga is usually in black and white but
covers can be in black and white, or colour.
2. When drawing your manga…
a. Don’t draw right up to the edge of the paper. Always leave a margin so that your art will not be
cut off or lost when your manga is put in a binder or folder.
b. Don’t forget to leave space for the dialogue when you begin drawing. You don’t want to be stuck
with a lots of pretty pictures but no space for your speech ballons.
3. Remember that manga is a medium, and not a style of drawing. There is no right or wrong style of
drawing manga. As you can see below, manga characters can be drawn in very different styles; from
very simple on the left, to quite realistic on the right, and everything in between.
4. If you’re stuck, and can’t think of what to do, read some manga, and get inspired!
