Long Island Summer Activities

There are a lot of travel destinations in New York, and Long Island is probably one of the most
popular. While visitors can go to the island at any time of the year, the bulk of tourist influx, however,
is during the summer season, when weather is most favorable. This is why the island becomes a little
too crowded during the summer, making Long Island hotel reservations become a challenge.
Enjoying the Beaches
The island offers pristine beaches for tourists, but waters do remain cool, even during the warmest
months. The chilly waters do not keep swimmers from taking a plunge, though. One of the famous
beaches on Long Island is at Jones Beach State Park, which has about 6 miles of shoreline. This is
where famous personalities from Manhattan go, to escape the bustle of the metropolis.
Another popular beach is the Fire Island National Seashore, which sees the most number of visitors
in July. There are a number of places to see on the Fire Island. The Fire Island Lighthouse is famous,
as well as the Wilderness Visitor Center and the William Floyd Estate, which is home to artifacts,
some dating as old as 300 years. The Fire Island National Seashore has no entrance fee, but there
are parking and ferry fees.
Going to an Equestrian Center
Horseback riding is popular in Long Island too. There are a few equestrian centers on the island. One
is the Sweet Hills Riding Center in West Hills County, which has more than 900 acres of woodland.
Inexperienced people can take instructions from guides, but riders should be at least 8 years old.
Those who would like to try can witness the picturesque trail.
Playing Golf
Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, a famous golf venue on Long Island, has five golf courses.
Each golf course is designed for players with a certain degree of mastery of the sport. Newcomers to
the sport should probably choose the Green Course, while professional golfers should check out the
challenge offered by the Black Course. These golf courses are open to the public from April to
November.
Running
Everyone is welcome to join the 10-kilometer road race from Iron Pier Beach to the Great Peconic
Bay. Of course, most people participate just for the thrill of it, without having intentions of hitting the
finish line first. Those who can participate get a chance to enjoy exquisite sceneries like hills, winding
roads, farms, vineyards, and orchards. This race is reserved for the physically fit people, though.
Fishing
There are a number of fishing sites in Long Island, but make sure to check where these sites are.
There is one venue in New Rochelle where you get to ride on a 21-foot Contendor, and try to catch
striped bass or porgies. You can go fishing on a half-day or whole-day affair with your family.
Shopping for Crafts
Every middle of July, the Fine Arts and Craft Summertime Spectacular is held in Long Island. This
event gathers local vendors to display their handmade things. This is perfect for people who are fond

of collecting handicrafts, jewelry, dolls, art pieces, and toys. You can also check out antique items,
tapestries, homemade soaps, and other various crafts.
