Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide step-by-step procedure to manage
Dell EqualLogic devices
using Dell Management Console (DMC) 1.0. Currently
EqualLogic storage arrays are not supported by
DMC v1.0. The attempt of this document is to provide some minimal
EqualLogic management
capabilities like creating a separate Organizational Group for these storage arrays, defining right-click
actions to launch specific applications with respect to the selected device and recognizing traps coming
from them.
Discover an EqualLogic device
Discover an EqualLogic device as you normally would discover any other type of SNMP device. Once
the discovery completes, DMC will show this device under
Unknown Organizational Group of
All
Devices Organizational View. You can view this on
Manage | All Devices page.
Create a Custom Organizational View (OV) and
Organizational Group (OG)
This section will help you to create a custom Organizational group so that you can include all
EqualLogic arrays to this group for easy access.
Note: Although a device can be associated with a new OG it will still remain associated with its original
OG.
Steps by steps to create Custom OV/OG
1. Navigate to Manage | All Resources.
2. On the left hand side resources tree select the root node, “Organizational Views”.
3. Right click on it and select New | Organizational View. See picture below.
Figure 1: Creating new Organizational View and Group 4. Rename the created organizational view by right-clicking on the view and selecting Rename.
5. Select the created organizational view, right click, and select New | Organizational Group.
6. Rename the created organizational view appropriately, for example
EqualLogic Storage Arrays, by
right-clicking on the group and selecting Rename.
Note: You can also try doing these steps on the
Manage | All Devices | Storage Devices | Right Click |
New | Organizational Group.
Then try to add the device under
Unknown device group to this Organizational View. Device with in the
All Devices Organizational Group will move back to their previous OG, this is because
All Devices OV is
a
dynamic view and update its member ship with the device update. That’s why we created a new
Organizational Group with a new Organizational Views in the above steps.
Note: Organizational Views (OV) are independent of one another. If you move a resource in one view, it
does not affect the other. If you want to delete a resource, you would need to delete the resource from
both OV. This is by design. One of the fundamental rules of OV/OG is that resources can only appear in
one OG beneath any given OV. Assigning a resource to a second OG within an OV will always act as a
move operation. Exception is “All Devices” OG. This is defined as a dynamic group and will
automatically obtain its membership (as opposed to a static group that can only change when users
manually add/remove resources). Because of this, resources that are manually moved out (or copied into a
separate static group) will automatically move back to the dynamic group once their departure has been
noticed or when their membership updates.
If you wish to mix dynamic and static groups in the one OV, the resources that appear in the static OG
should not form part of the dynamic OG definition or the dynamic OG will always win out.
If you wish to logically group the servers, create a new OV that is either fully dynamic or fully static in
nature.
Move EqualLogic device to above created Organizational Group
1. Navigate to the Manage->All Devices page.
2. Under All Devices select the Unknown group.
3. You can find the EqualLogic device by its hostname (under the
Name column). Select the
EqualLogic device, right-click, and select “Add to organizational group”.
Figure 2: Adding the discovered network resource to user defined OG 4. On the Add to organizational group pop-up, expand the custom view created above and select the
created organizational group. Press the Ok button.
5. Navigate to Manage->All Resources and the organizational group the
EqualLogic device was moved
to. Verify it is now displayed under this group.
Right click action for EqualLogic devices
This section will help you to create a custom right-click action for the
EqualLogic storage array. For
example, if you want to have a right-click menu option to launch the
EqualLogic Web-Based
management application or to initiate a telnet session (Telnet is enabled for the
EqualLogic device).
Below sections help you to create a right click action (URL based) and launch “EqualLogic Console”
with respect to the selected device.
Create custom right click action
1. Navigate to Settings->Console->Right-Click Actions.
2. Select Management Applications, right-click and select New->Right-Click Action.
3. Rename the created New Right-Click Action, for example “
Launch EqualLogic Console” by right-
clicking on the action and selecting
Rename.
4. Select the right-click action just created and next to the Resource Type pull down menu select
“Network Resource”.
Note: You can ignore steps 5, 6 and 7 if you don’t want additional check for whether IP Address
for that device exist or not. This check will avoid showing right click option on that device if
DMC was not able to fetch the IP address of the device.
In the absence of this check, DMC will still show the right click option for this action, but when
selected, will popup an error message.
5. Under
Expression click on the plus sign. Click on the blue
Select link.
6. On the Select Attributes pop-up click on the Group pull down menu and select Network Resource
Data->Device TCPIP.
Note: This list is not in sorted order, so you need to scroll this list a bit. Resource Attributes |
Data Classes | Network Resource Data | Device TCPIP.
7. This group will show various attributes. Select the
IP Address attribute and press OK.
Note: Currently there is a defect that breaks this: DF272329: Right-Click action error when
selecting Network Resource type, so I was unable to verify the remainder of these procedures.
8. Under Configure Action, next to “Action Type” select: URL.
9. Next to “Base URL” enter the URL of the EqualLogic Storage Array management application. You
can either hardcode the IP Address here (For example: http://MYEQLLOGICIPAADRESS/) or make
use of variables to make this launch action a generic one. It is not a good idea to hard code the ip
address, as it will work only for that particular device. Later one is the recommended way. To make
this launch generic for all the
EqualLogic devices, use
Substitution Parameters section below.
10. Next to “Open in” choose either New Window or Virtual Window. The New Window option is
recommended as it will ensure the application will be rendered in a supported window size.
11. Click “Add”, in the Group drop-down; select Resource Attributes -> Data Classes -> Network
Resource Data -> Device TCPIP. Select “IP Address” in the left hand side, and use “>” to move it to
the selected item list box on the right hand side. Click “Ok”.
Figure 3: Creating right click action for Equal Logic devices 12. It will populate the parameter name “Device TCPIP.IP Address” and it’s value in the Substitution
Parameters section. Select this and click “Use” or type
http://% Device TCPIP.IP Address%/ in the
Base URL text field.
13. Ensure that right click action task status is “On” (top right corner in the page).
14. Click
Save Changes.
Test the custom Right-Click action
Now that the custom right-click action has been created and configured you are ready to launch it.
1. Navigate to Manage -> All Devices.
2. Locate the organizational group you created and your EqualLogic device. Select it, right-click on it
and navigate to “Management Applications” -> “Launch EqualLogic Console”.
Figure 4: Launch EqualLogic Console
Figure 5: EqualLogic Console Note: Above created right click action will be available for all the “Network Resources” devices,
irrespective of the OV/OG contains that Network Resource. You can test it by clicking the same device
under All Devices |
Unknown Organizational Group.
Setting up the DMC to receive EQL SNMP traps
Dell Management Console will receive traps from Equallogic device and show them on the Manage |
Events and Alerts window. This section will help you to understand the differences between the
unrecognized EqualLogic traps and the properly recognized traps and how to make the traps recognizable
in the DMC.
Use the
MIBImport feature to import
EqualLogic trap definitions in Dell Management Console. You need
to have those MIBs (eqldisk.mib, eqlgroup.mib, eqlmember.mib). eqldisk.mib contains one trap definition
for the disk related traps and eqlmember.mib contains approx 21 traps for the members related traps.
Note: Before using the MIBImport feature, visit the Home | Monitoring and Alerting | Event Console |
Protocol Management | Alert Management Settings page. Expand the
Unknown event category in the
middle frame. There should not be more than 2 traps definitions (if you have not used MIBImport feature
before). If you see lots of traps, that may be because of a known inconsistent issue. You can delete those
