Math anxiety is a feeling of intense frustration or helplessness that affects and/or
interferes with one's ability to manipulate numbers and perform mathematical
operations in in-school or out-of-school contexts.
People who experience math anxiety can be classified into three groups: Those
who cannot (Intellectual/ Educational Domain), those who think they cannot
(Psychological/ Emotional Domain) and those who `block' at the first drop of a
symbol (Social/ Motivational Domain).
Intellectual/ Educational Domain- is comprised of influences that are more
cognitive in nature. Specifically, they include but are not limited to, the
knowledge and skills an individual has and or is expected to acquire and his or her
perception of success or failure in them. It can be described as an individual's
`rationalization' of their math anxiety. It means finding reasons why it is okay and
inevitable to have mathematical anxiety.
Psychological/ Emotional Domain- are faculties that are affective in nature. This
domain involves feelings toward math. It may also be characterized by the
`suppression' of their math anxiety: the students feel that math anxiety is a
weakness that they must overcome. If they do not succeed, it often leads to self
criticism and, in more severe cases, loss of self-esteem.
Social/ Motivational Domain- are the forces that act upon a student like family,
peers, and the social system. It deals with an individual's pursuit or avoidance of
mathematics. These behaviors are logical consequences of the value place on
mathematics, which is influenced by the attitudes of significant others and by
society in general. It is also the `denial' of the existence of math: they carefully
construct their lives so as to avoid all mathematics as much as possible.
