Mexican haciendas in Yucatan - Some highlights
The Mexican haciendas in Yucatan were a family business in 17th Century, the colonial
in as times, and have now become historical places for visiting of the tourists coming to
Mexico.
Most of the haciendas formerly were cattle ranches and lately converted as a
henequen. Henequen is a type of agave cactus and is processed for its fiber to produce
rope primarily. The fiber strands are known as sisal fiber which was one of the most
important exports of the Yucatan in the late 1800 to early 1900. There was attempts to
produce the sisal fiber at large scale but failed due to lack of limited supply of the
necessary machineries.
Like sisal fiber, Yaxcopoil is also an excellent example of working hacienda in the 17th
century. It means the place of green Alamo trees and offers a look back of three past
centuries - the pre-Hispanic period, the Spanish colonial period, and the years of
henequen production. Yaxcopoil was one of the most important Mexican haciendas in
Yucatan for its large approximately 22,000 acres and its classic beauty. To-day, it has
become only 3% of the former size, but stil it attracts the visitors to look through the
glorious days of the ancient haciendas. Apart from a Church and Chapel, the Mayan
Room also invites the visitors to look into the oil painting of Mayan Pottery and other
artifacts of the classic period of 250 - 900 AD.
The "Green Gold" Henequen is the result of the industrial revolution of 19th century
when shredding machines were invented. It is powered by steam or diesel engine.
Many old farms converted to sisal production and soon henequen became known as
"Green Gold". During the World War 1 (1914 to 1918) supply of sisal was a high
demand due to production of rope. At that time, the hacienda owners made their

fortunes from the "Green Gold" and the "City of Merida" blossom many people with
wealth.
Apart from the above, the top ten Mexican haciendas in Yucatan may also be
reckoned in this context. They are: -

(7) Teya - Famour for bal room.
(8) Uayalceh - One of the few abandoned haciendas.
(9) Chunchucmil - Has a beautiful chapel.
(10) Tekit de Regil - Most beautiful and elegantly restored haciendas. Not opened for
public.
