AccordingtomanyMentalHeathworkers,depressivesymptomscanbeattributedtopeople
whoseconditionsfallbelowthecriterianecessaryforaformalfindingofamooddisorder.
Peoplewith"depressivesymptoms"mayfeelsad,hopelessorhavethe"blues".Patientsin
drugrehabwithcooccurringdepressivesymptomsareplentifulandfullblownmood
disordersabound;arecentstudyshowedthatapproximately40%ofalcoholicsand60%of
drugaddictsalsohadindependentmooddisorders.Thenumbersrevealthatwomenare
morelikelythanmentosufferfromaddictionplusamentaldisorder,especiallydepression.
"AlthoughpeopleinourRecoveryCenterexperiencetemporaryperiodsofsadnessor
depressedmood,manyareactuallysufferingsymptomsassociatedwithfirstwithdrawal
thenwithBiochemicaldistortionandwestrivetoeventuallyfindoutifamentalhealth

Inordertodevelopaneffectiveprogramfordealingwithdepressivesymptomsduringdrug

AnotherMuskokaRecoveryCenterphilosophyisAddictiontoorwithdrawalfromdrugsor
alcoholcanleadtosymptomsofdepression.Ifsevereenough,thesymptomscanleadtoa
diagnosisof"substanceinducedmooddisorder".Thistypeofillnesspresentsasa

addictsduringwithdrawalaswell.Howeverinthosewhoareaddictedtoopioids,suchas
heroinaddicts,thedisordercanpresentduringeitheruseorwithdrawal,withsymptoms
duringusepresentingaslackofenergy,poorappetiteandtroubleconcentrating.

sufferfromdepressionmaynotbediagnoseduntilaftertheyhavestoppedthedrugor
alcoholuse,asthesubstancestendtocoverupactualsymptoms.Formany,thedepression

Oneofthemostimportantaspectsofdepressionandsubstanceabuseisthat,without
propertreatment,thedepressioncanthwartsobriety.Forsomepatients,effectivetreatment
mayrequiretheuseofmedicationlongaftertheyaredischargedfromdrugrehab.Further,
thecooccurrenceofaddictionanddepressionoftenleadstoadelayinseekingtreatment.
