    • Provide background on opportunity for campus-wide deployment of Blackboard Portfolio tool
    • Highlight current capabilities of NIU’s Blackboard Content System available to all faculty/staff
    • Briefly introduce features of the Blackboard Portfolio tool that are bundled with the Content System
    • Identify faculty interested in participating in pilot of tool and providing feedback concerning campus-wide implementation

    • Bundled with current Blackboard Content System that NIU has licensed (no additional cost)
    • Limited customization
    • At recommendation of NIU Computing Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC), faculty input is being sought for implementation

    • Tool that allows faculty and students to store, manage, and share content
  9. Current Content Collection Features
    • Fully-integrated with Blackboard Learning System that faculty and students are already familiar with
    • Makes reusing files much easier – faculty can save a file in the Content Collection once and link to that file from many courses

    • Allows easy file management – when a file that resides in the Content Collection needs updating, faculty can update it only once and there won’t be any need to go into each course to upload an updated version of the file
    • Reduces resource consumption because the files can be managed and shared without duplication

    • Offers easy access to resources placed in e-Reserves and allows faculty to link to those resources from their Blackboard courses

    • The Blackboard Portfolio tool is one of the bundled features in the Blackboard Content System that NIU has already licensed
    • It is helpful to review the current features already available in the Blackboard Content System

    • Users access their personal files
    • Users use search feature to locate files and folders other users have shared with them

    • Used to store files for educational and administrative units
    • Departments or colleges can use this area to store files for several faculty to have access to

    • Library may post electronic resources, e-Reserves, or other library-related content
    • Online librarians may post materials to e-Reserves, but faculty can add the requested content to their course

    • Bookmarks feature allows for bookmarking files and folders for faster access
    • Search Content feature allows use of Basic or Advanced Search to locate materials

    • From a page you can create a link to files stored in My Content or even to complete folders. This is useful for creating a very basic portfolio consisting of only links to folders of personal content. In this way the portfolio is simply an (indirect) container of the files in My Content.

    • Allowed storage in My Content limits the amount of files the basic portfolio can contain
    • Disadvantage of the basic portfolio is that items can’t be reused in multiple basic portfolios (other than copy and paste)

    • Much more functionality of creating a portfolio layout that expresses who you are
    • Possible to create a complete portfolio template (layout, colors and menu items)
    • Similar to the basic portfolio every menu item is actually a page in your portfolio

    • In the basic portfolio the content and the page are the same layer, where in the personal portfolio a page has another layer: artifacts
    • Artifacts can be made separately from a portfolio

    • Can create a library of artifacts that also can have links to files (but NO folders) in My content
    • When building a personal portfolio you simply put artifacts on a page in your portfolio. A page can contain several artifacts on one page. Advantage of this approach is that you can reuse artifacts in as many portfolios as you want and by modifying that artifact, they will also be modified in all your portfolio's where you used that artifact.

    • Uploaded files in artifacts are stored in the artifacts themselves and don't need to be in the My Content folder.

    • When the Portfolio is complete, users may wish to manage certain aspects of the Portfolio such as adding additional content, sharing the Portfolio, and downloading the Portfolio for future use.

    • The owner of a Portfolio may share it with individual users on the Blackboard system, groups of users on the system, or individuals who are external to the system.
