What I have done and am hoping to do with my subject; if he wishes’s to comply
My first research section I held contained two interviews and five simple activities. This applies to
my essential reading as it is one of Banks
“three broad activities: ‘making visual representations (studying society by producing images)”
(Page 40 – 41; doing visual ethnographies)
However I did not use visual methods at first because
“In practice, decisions are best made once researchers are in a position to assess which specific visual
method will be appropriate or ethical”
(Page 40; doing visual ethnographies)
I did feel the need to record the conversation so i used a Dictaphone but I understand by
“considering how visual methods, image and technologies will be interpreted by individuals”
(Page 42; doing visual ethnographies)
At the end of this first stage I tried to reflect and build a thesis about the subject trying to use
connotation, and created a piece of concept art and plan for a 3D virtual environment. However as i
missed the second and third
“Broad activities”
(Page 40 – 41; doing visual ethnographies)
By Banks I feel the need to take a step back and
”‘examining pre-existing visual representations’ (studying images for information about society)’;
‘collaborating with social actors in the production of visual representations’.”
(Page 40 – 41; doing visual ethnographies)
As well as develop upon
“‘making visual representations (studying society by producing images)”
(Page 40 – 41; doing visual ethnographies)
I will do this in a number of ways firstly as my initial interviews were held in my room I wish to
conduct the next set of research within his bedroom or other room within his house as
“Individuals constantly re-situate themselves and construct their self-identities in relation to not only
other individuals but also to material objects and cultural discourses.”
(Page 47 – 48; doing visual ethnographies)
However as I believe I now the subject a bit better I feel the need for some sort of visual evidence
like before but I must make
“Decisions about the particular methodologies and modes of representation to be used should pay
attention to intersections between local visual cultures the ways in which the visual is treated by
wider users or audiences of the research”
(Page 43; doing visual ethnographies)
This relates to me as my subject is under the age of 16 and is considered a minor (still under care of
parents) within the public of the united kingdom so I need his and of course his parents’ permission
and I may wish to blur his face out or just write notes about the talk
Another possible idea which applies mainly to the first stage of Banks structure for ethnographies, is
to hand the equipment over to the subject
“in a study they asked twelve homeless people to photographs... of key times in their day, of typical
activities and spaces, or anything else”
(Page 42; doing visual ethnographies)
This is another possibility but the most important thing is that the subject enjoys what they are
doing.
“they also report that ‘ the participants said that they enjoyed making the pictures”
(Page 42; doing visual ethnographies)
To complete the last stage
“‘collaborating with social actors in the production of visual representations’.”
(Page 40 – 41; doing visual ethnographies)
I will collaborate with my subject by showing the work I created within my concept art and plans and
connotations I have made to see what my subject thinks; only after the other stages as I imagine
that telling them what I have done in detailed way will change his social behaviour which will not
help me.
In conclusion I will create a plan that follows these rules which I will then use to continue my
research which in turn will help me redevelop my ideas for the virtual environment.
