PIDGIN INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The first step is to downlaod the installation file to your computer.
Click here to download Pidgin

Double-click the pidgin.exe installation file. This will begin the program installation.
You may see the following Security Warning. If so, click the “Run” button.

Click “Next” to begin the Setup Wizard.
*************************************************************************************
Click the “Next” button.
*************************************************************************************
The following screen allows additional components to be installed. At this point you can select your
Pidgin icon location (Desktop, Start Menu or both). After making your choices click the “Next” button.

You may see the following screen for installing GTK+. If so, click the “Next” button.

Click the “Install” button.
*************************************************************************************
You will see the progress bar scroll to the right for a few seconds.
*************************************************************************************
Installation is now complete. Click the “Next” button.

Select the “Run Pidgin 2.5.6” box and click the “Finish” button.

Once Pidgin starts you should see the following window. Click the “Add” buton.

In the Add Account window, select the fol owing options:
Protocal: XMPP
Username: This is the same username you use
for portal/email access
Domain: im.mcneese.edu
Resource: Leave this box blank
Password: This is the same password you use
for portal/email access
Remember password: Select this box if desired
Local alias: Optional screen alias
The “New mail notifications” & “buddy icon”
boxes are optional and wil be unchecked for this
example.
The “Create this new account on the server” box
should not be selected

In the same Add Account window, click the Advanced tab and select the fol owing options.
Require SSL/TLS: Unchecked
Force old (port 5223) SSL: Checked
Al ow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams:
Unchecked
Connect port: 5223
Connect server: im.mcneese.edu
File transfer proxies: Leave this box unchanged
BOSH URL: Leave this box blank
Show Custom Smileys: Leave this box unchanged
The “Create this new account on the server” box
should not be selected

In the same Add Account window, click the Proxy tab and select the fol owing options.
When finished click the “Add” button.
Proxy type: No Proxy
The “Create this new account on
the server” box should not be
selected

If you see the following Certificate Verification window click the “Accept” button.
*************************************************************************************
You should see a window similar to the following with the account you just created.
Click the “Close” button.

Installation is now complete and you are ready to start adding buddies.
On the main Pidgin menu, select “Buddies” and then “Add Buddy.”

The Add Buddy window should open similar to the fol owing. Enter the appropriate information.
Buddy’s username: follow the format of:
username@im.mcneese.edu
Most often these entries will be the user’s
email address.
(Optional) Alias: Optional screen alias
The “Add buddy to group” box is optional and
will not be used for this example.
When finished click the “Add” button.

Creating Groups (Optional):
Buddies can be arranged according to groups.
On the main Pidgin menu, select “Buddies” and then “Add Group.”

The Add Group window should open similar to the fol owing. Enter the appropriate information.
When finished click the “Add” button.

Once groups have been created, buddies can be arranged by one of two ways:
1. Dragging the buddy to the appropriate group with the mouse
2. Right-click on a buddy, select “Move to” and choose the appropriate goup

Broadcasting Messages to a Group (Optional):
Messages can be sent to all members of a group.
The first step is to downlaod the plugin file to your computer.

Copy the downloaded file, groupmsg-2.5.1-piwener2.dl , to the folder
C:\Program Files\Pidgin\plugins
*************************************************************************************
On the main Pidgin menu, select “Tools” and then “Plugins.” Select the “Group IM” box.
*************************************************************************************
Broadcast messages can be sent by right-clicking on a Group and then selecting
“Group IM (al buddies)” or “Group IM (online only).”

Transferring Files (Optional):
Transferring files to a Buddy can be initiated by one of two ways:
1. Drag the file to the Buddy name inside the Pidgin window
2. Drag the file inside of a conversation window

The sender of a file transfer will see the following status window.

The receiver of a file transfer will see a window similar to the following
and may Accept or Cancel the file transer.

Run Pidgin on Startup (Optional):
Pidgin can be made to run when Windows starts.
On the main Pidgin menu, select “Tools” and then “Plugins.”

The Plugins window should open similar to the fol owing. Select the “Windows Pidgin Options” box.
