Jakobsen Beach & Guesthouse, Kigoma
Places to buy food or eat out
Lake Tanganyika Hotel is a new international-style hotel. You can have your meal
inside, or close to the lake outside. They have an air-conditioned bar. Main courses are
around 15 000 TSH.*
Hilltop Hotel is on this side of town. They have a beautiful restaurant with a stunning
view. And it's a good place to get non-greasy chapattis. They do not sell alcohol, but
you can bring your own. Main courses are around 15 000 TSH.*
Convenient eateries on the Main Street:
New modern Restaurant serves meat/chicken/fish with rice/ugali/cooking bananas.
They make fresh fruit juices too. A main course is between 3000 and 8000 TSH.*
Kigoma Catering serves a variety of dishes including pizza, but is less reliable than
the New Modern. Prices are between 5000 and 8000 TSH.*
Groceries - on the main street:
Kigoma Bakery sells frozen and chilled foods: ice cream and frozen home-made
passion juice, tender chicken, king prawns, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
For dry groceries, try one of the small shops, like Khalfan's Shop.
Home-made Indian Take Away.
If you are here for several days, you can order tasty Indian meals from Somar, an
Indian lady who lives in town. Her most popular dishes are Masala curry, Coconut curry
and Chicken Pilau, with side dishes of Raita and Naan bread. She cooks for 4-12
people and charges around 9 000 Tsh per person.* She prefers you order 2 days in
advance, but you can give it a try for sooner. She is sometimes able to send the meal
out to the beach with a taxi: ask about this when you order. Ask us for her number.
Buying fish from the nearby fishing village:
Katonga fishing village is a 15 minutes' walk from the guesthouse. The best time to
see the night's catch is between 8 and 9am. Remember that a fisherman's life is
unpredictable: sometimes they have no fish for sale. They use lights to fish with, so
the moon gives some indication: the darker the night, the better the catch.
Fruit and vegetable markets:
Kigoma market on the main street is the smallest and most convenient. Mwanga
market is larger and cheaper. Nazareth market has the largest selection and best
prices, but is farther away (near the airport).
