JACOB JANERKA'S
RESEARCH
ILLUSTRATOR/CONCEPT ARTIST PERSPECTIVE

YOUTUBE
STRENGTHS:

* Huge viewer base.
* Easily upload videos
* Subscriptions can allow fans to follow you
WEAKNESSES
* Only limited to videos
* Anonymyty + comments= The horrible
thing that is the internet
OPPORTUNITIES
* Potentially could use viral marketing
* Youtube is always growing
* Create tutorials

THREATS
* Vimeo could possibly start to take over as
something more respectable.
One example of succesful youtube advertising is
* Videos can be spread in a negative way
Youtube.com
Krispy Kreme who satires himself as the
best/worst rapper in the world. Before the

the viral explosion. Obviously though there are
many other ways to provoke a viral video which

promotion campaign, however obviously its a lot harder
than it sounds.
One idea that I had to utilise youtube was to create
fake hype for a game which I would create the art as-
sets for. Potentially getting people and game developers
interested. However this is obviously a lot harder than it
sounds and would need much planning and considera-
tion. And probably wouldn't be to viral unless it was
something extremely creative and groundbreaking, or
offensive.
I could also start creating some sort of tutorial video
which could possibly offer some exposure.

CONCEPTART.ORG
STRENGTH:

* Large art community niche
* Has a looking for work section
* Networking with like minded individuals
* Provides motivation
WEAKNESSES
* Audience is confined mostly to only 2d
artists
* Anonymyty + comments= The horrible thing
that is the internet
* You have to be amazing or very consistent
to get noticed
* As it got more popular the quality got
saturated
* Website drama provoked a lot of high end
artists to leave the forum
OPPORTUNITIES
* Networking for future jobs
* Professionals and art directors may browse
the finally finished section and potentially
off you a job
THREATS
Marko Djurdjevic is one example of an artist who got a job
offer from the forums. He created some fan art for Marvel
* Art directors or potential employers may
and ended up getting employed.
see bad work, or may take offence to some
comments you have made in the past.
CONCLUSION
Concept art is more of a learning tool than a marketing
tool. While there is some potential to get seen by art
directors and companies, it is not as common anymore.
And the realistic fact that you have to really bring
something amazing to the table to create some hype.
However in the sketchbook section if you are consistent
and offer something to the community you can build

strong networks and create a small following.

CGHUB
STRENGTH:

* Large art community niche
* The quality work is at a higher standard on
average than other art websites
* Works get featured regulary on the home
page
* Networking with like minded individuals
WEAKNESSES
* There is a higher quality of work but there
are less users
* Users not as active
OPPORTUNITIES
* Networking
* Professionals and art directors may come
across your work if you gain popularity
* A lot of big names in the industry post on
CGhub, giving potential to network with
them
THREATS
* Art directors or potential employers may
see bad work, or may take offence to some
comments you have made in the past.
http://cghub.com/forum/
CONCLUSION
CGhub conclusion is basically the same as conceptart.org,
really the only difference is that there is less saturation,
and it generally has better quality work.

DEVIANT ART
STRENGTH:
* One of the largest art websites
* Great way to market yourelf with
followers etc
* Easy way to keep up to date with other
artists when they post a new artwork.
WEAKNESSES
* Furries
* Bad fan art
* Deviant art is considered to some as taboo,
however this stigma doesnt exist as much
anymore.
OPPORTUNITIES
* If for example you created a well made
fan art piece it could explode all over
deviant art if it was good enough
* Networking with well known artists
THREATS
* Possibly could get negative feedback from
fanboy groups.
CONCLUSION
http://dilatedd.deviantart.com/
Deviant art has some good potential for spreading your
art and creating a following. Posting Fan art especially
could get your name out there. And it acts as another
way to update potential followers. However you need
to create something different or interesting

TWITTER
STRENGTH:

* Can submit information to followers very
quickly and easily.
* Updates can be kept quite frequent
without the fear of appearing too
spammy
WEAKNESSES
* Updates can be washed out by the other
100's of users being followed by your
target audience
OPPORTUNITIES
* If you make something amazing, or post
something worthwhile there is potential
for someone else with a large following
to retweet it, thus getting you exposure.
* Networking
THREATS
* There arent really any potential threats
except for maybe having arguments with
other people which could portray you
https://twitter.com/
negatively
CONCLUSION
Twitter is a good way to keep followers updated
frequently without appearing spammy and has the
potential to get you retweeted by people who have more
followers.

KOTAKU
STRENGTH:

* Huge gaming community which works
well in conjuction for most illustrators,
especially concept artists. As Fantasy and
Sci Fi is popular with this demographic
WEAKNESSES
* Work can be ridiculed rather than praised
* Fan Art is usually the only work that is
published
OPPORTUNITIES
* Reaching the gaming community
* Creating an internet presence in the
gaming industry
THREATS
* You could get portrayed negatively in an
article
CONCLUSION
http://www.kotaku.com.au/
Kotaku could be a great marketing tool, although its
obviously not that easy to get an article or page dedicated
to yourself unless you make something extremely
awesome. However with this in mind one can purposely
create something that would appeal to kotaku, like fan art
for a video game.
Dave Rapoza created a set of realistic
TMNT and was featured on Kotaku,
which gave him huge exposure.

REDDIT
STRENGTH:

* One of the largest gatherings on the internet.
You can reach 100000's of people within minutes if
what you post is interesting
WEAKNESSES
* Can be ridiculued heavily
* Posts can fade into obscurity quickly if it doesnt hold
a wow factor.
OPPORTUNITIES
* If you manage to get to the front page you could
get huge exposure. Possibly provoking people to
follow you on other networking sites, possibly
creating a fan base, or even employment.
THREATS
* You could be seen to be whoring yourself out and
get a bad reputation
http://www.reddit.com/
CONCLUSION
Reddit can be another very usefull tool to market yourself very
quickly. However there has to be some wow factor in whatever
your trying to promote. However with basic knowledge how
reddit works, one could probable engineer a post which could
get popular incredibly fast.

Mathew Inman creates the popular web comic Oatmeal. He often uses
Reddit to his advantage to make his comics and projects go viral with
reddit. For example he managed to raise $220 000 from a goal of $20
000 for charity after making a humourous comic about being sued by
funny junk and getting it featured on reddit.

SUPER SPECIALISED FOLIOS
STRENGTH:

* The employer can see you have made an effort
to purposely target their company and may
appreciate the effort if it is well done
WEAKNESSES
* If your work isnt great, it doesnt matter
* It takes much more time to send to multiple
companies
OPPORTUNITIES
* Potential employment
* Employer may remember your efforts and
consider you for future projects
THREATS
* You could seem like a kiss ass
CONCLUSION
Specialised portfolios for each company would work
well, however the time and effort required to do it well
frequently may well be too much. Should be reserved for big
opportunities or dream jobs.
http://edge.alluremedia.com.au/m/k/2009/09/tim-schafer-application-1.jpg
Here is an example of Tim Shafers application to Lucasfilm games. He
constructed it so it was like a text adventure, impressing the employer.
MISC IDEAS
* Could possibly contruct a video portfolio directed at a particular company,
implementing something interesting or humourous
* Make up a fake game similar to Tim Shafer but focus it more on art style.
* Make a comic for the application
* Do something out of the ordinary, maybe hire actors to do some elaborate
dramatic application.

BLOGS
STRENGTH:

* A place to put sketches and ideas, not just
finals
* Employers can see your process
* Posting tutorials can help attract a
following
* Shows a personality behind the artist
WEAKNESSES
* If your work is not interesting or good,
people will spend less than 5 seconds
looking at your work
OPPORTUNITIES
* Art directors or employers may admire
your work and hire you.
* Fan followers may purchase merchandise
like posters.
THREATS
* If the blog starts getting too personal
it may deter employers disliking your
persona.
http://daverapoza.blogspot.com.au/
CONCLUSION
Blogs are a good pure accessible way to show your process
and ideas. Posting in forum threads may cause saturation
Here Dave Rapoza portrays his blog as a satire of violence
by other peoples comments and critiques in comparison.
and over the top bad ass. Which coincides with his art which
follows similar themes. Thus creating his artist idenity
