Selecting a high quality Egyptian Cotton Duvet
Covers
What exactly is a duvet? Good question. There seems to be a great deal of uncertainty on the
subject.
Are a duvet and a comforter identical? A significant number of folks in the States regard them
as being identical, but technically and historically they really aren't. A Egyptian cotton sheets
duvet, speaking traditionally, is the only cover a sleeping person uses, while a comforter is
normally used with a sheet, and sometimes with a blanket, also.
Australians originally called duvets "continental quilts," and some Australians today call them
"doonas." Today, some Europeans name any thick blanket a duvet.
"Duvet" is a French word that refers to down feathers, and the first duvets were fashioned in
France and filled with the down of eider ducks.
Because duvets weren't used with sheets, they tended to get dirty quickly. That, in combination
with the fact that down feathers bunch up when washed in water and thus lose much of their
insulating value, soon led people to begin using duvet covers.
Today, duvets might not seem to be quite as vital as they once were, now that duvets are
frequently filled with machine-washable synthetics instead of down. But silk duvet covers do
still offer a number of important advantages.
Duvet covers come in a wide variety of colours and designs, so it's easy to match up a duvet
cover with your bedroom decor; the same can't often be said of a duvet. Duvet covers also
allow you the option of just buying a new style or colour of duvet when the mood hits you.
Changing your duvet cover is a terrific way to do an easily affordable mini-remodel.
Duvet covers come in a variety of fabrics, but many people consider duvet covers made of
Egyptian cotton to be the best. Due to its lavish feel, Egyptian cotton is deemed the "king of all
cottons."
Egyptian cotton is made from special cotton famous for its lengthy staples (fibres). Because of
their added length, these staples can produce thread that is a lot thinner than other brands of
cotton can. Because of these thin threads, Egyptian cotton has a higher thread count than other

types of cotton. The higher the thread count number is, the tighter the weave and the more
smooth the fabric will feel.
You might assume that, since they're so soft, Egyptian cotton duvet covers UK materials must
be frailer and less durable than other types of cotton. Not true. Since the threads in Egyptian
cotton material are longer and more bunched together, they're actually stronger. This smaller,
yet stronger, thread makes a sheet that is stronger and lighter in weight, and also breathes
better than other cotton.
And, because of the fact that all Egyptian cotton is picked by hand, you're guaranteed of getting
the finest quality and purity. Most other types of cotton are mechanically picked, which exerts a
great amount of stress on the fibres, often damaging them.
With a reasonable amount of care, an Egyptian cotton duvet cover may retain its beauty and
comfort for decades.
