Some Things To Know About STD Testing

Document Description
Being screened for sexually transmitted diseases is a reasonably basic medical procedure which sexually active persons may find important. STD testing is a multifaceted thing, however, It may be important to learn which diseases one is at risk of so that the correct screens may be applied. The only reasonably sure way to avoid contracting a sexually transmitted disease is to abstain entirely from sexual contact. If this is not the case, people who are sexually active and not in a long-term monogamous relationship with a disease free partner are usually advised to be screened regularly for the most common or probable complications. These diseases can prove potentially more dangerous for women, and as such they are encouraged to undergo routine Pap tests and chlamydia screens. As many diseases can have strongly negative consequences for the reproductive system in females, this preventative screening is as much for the woman's benefit as it is for the benefit of any potential children she may have in the future. Men without symptoms are not usually encouraged to be routinely screened. Males who engage in sexual contact with other men may be advised to submit to annual screening for HIV, syphilis, and gonorrhea as well as chlamydia. Untreated, these diseases may prove fatal or, at the very least, increase the risk of contracting additional infections. There are no screening procedures which detect any and all diseases. The best course of action for a patient who would like to submit to STD testing is to determine which diseases they are most at risk of contracting. There are web sites on the Internet which can be very helpful in narrowing it down to only the most likely candidates. Once the scope of things is understood, the doctor will be able to perform specific and reliable tests and prescribe treatment if necessary.
