If you suspect that you have STD, it is important that you know where to go to obtain help and more often than not it usually involves a STD clinic. Choosing a clinic is not something that you need to make a rash decision with and it is not something that you can easily go to whenever you feel the need.
Appointment
You need at least 24 hours to book an appointment for the checkup or any of their services. Once you have booked your appointment, you need to prepare all the necessary questions or doubts that you want answered. If you have laboratory results done previously, you need to bring it along with other pertinent records though this may only be applicable in old patients. New patients must adhere to the policies of the clinic regarding checkups.
Make sure that you inform the doctor of any medical history, sexual history (if asked) and clear the air for any issues before you go along with the procedures.
Checkup
The STD clinic should be staffed with competent, reliable and trustworthy medical practitioners. You will be putting your faith in their hands especially in terms of confidentiality. Clinic staff must accompany you all throughout the procedures from examination to laboratory examination.
During the checkup, you will be asked of your comprehensive medical information to correlate it to your pending diagnosis. They will also base all their reports on the details and information that you have provided.
Procedures
Depending on the differential diagnosis based on the symptoms you present, you will be asked to give a specimen sample according to the tests that are going to be performed. You may be asked to submit yourself for phlebotomy for blood collection. Different specimen samples are going to be submitted depending on which causative agent they are going to detect.
Counseling
It is true that acquiring STD is an embarrassing event that may happen in your life. The STD clinic will also offer counseling inherent to different sexual issues. Most clinics offer support if you are going to undergo HIV testing or if you tested positive during the HIV test.
