Surgeon May Have Caused Permanent Partial Paralysis
Keene, NH (Law Firm Newswire) February 28, 2011 - “I have been involved with medical malpractice
cases for over 30 years in my practice as a New Hampshire injury lawyer and I am constantly coming
across cases that just make me shake my head. Just one slip of the surgeon’s knife may cause untold
complications,” said Charlie Donahue, a New Hampshire personal injury lawyer located in Keene. Donahue
handles injury cases in New Hampshire and across the United States.
This particular case resulted in a surgeon being sued for negligence and gross negligence after a spinal
operation left a patient permanently paralyzed and unable to control some of his muscles. The plaintiff had fallen
in 2007 and hurt his neck. Seeking medical help, he went to a local orthopedic surgeon. The doctor determined
the man would need surgery on his back.
The procedure was performed to remove a disk from the plaintiff’s spine, which was to be replaced with fixed
metal hardware. “While this might sound like a win-win situation on the surface,” Donahue said, “it certainly did
not turn out to be the case, because the doctor tore the dura around the patient’s spinal cord during the
operation.” The end result for the plaintiff is limited muscle control and permanent, partial paralysis.
“Cases like this in New Hampshire usually seek compensation for pain and suffering, present and future lost
wages, loss of enjoyment of life and enough money to assist them with their care for the rest of their life, among
other things. These are not easy cases for the plaintiff. Often, the trial is time consuming and draining, both
physically and emotionally and yet, when justice is achieved, some of the burden a plaintiff carries is lifted,”
Donahue said.
“For anyone who suspects they may be the victim of medical malpractice or negligence, make your first call to
my office. My track record speaks for itself and I will speak for you to get you the justice you deserve,” Donahue
said.
