Taylor Lautner New Moon Workout Taylor Lautner became a household name after his appearance in Twilight, particularly after gaining 20lbs for his role in New Moon. Taylor was already in great shape from his training as a martial artist (he won the Junior World Karate Championship at age 12). This training allowed him to build a strong core and ripped set of abs. However, by necessity, he was forced to gain muscle mass for his role as Jacob Black in New Moon. The role required him to be a physical, menacing presence and at 5’10” 140lbs, he was not. Fortunately, being 17 years old was the perfect time for Taylor to begin training for muscle mass. At a young age, he had a once in a lifetime opportunity to add muscle mass when he first started exercising. Taylor merely had to throw around some heavy weights, eat enough food, and watch the mass pile on. The great thing about Taylor Lautner is that he knew when to stop gaining muscle mass. He didn’t overdo it and go for the bodybuilder look. He was able to maintain an amazing set of six pack abs despite adding all that muscle. However, as a celebrity, Taylor was also fortunate in that he had all his free time to dedicate to working out. If you wanted to gain mass like Taylor Lautner, you would likely have to dedicate 1-2 years to training. Some Specifics of Taylor Lautner’s Workout Routine One aspect that Taylor’s trainer incorporated was negative reps. He would load up a bar with 40% more weight than Taylor could normally lift 10 times. He would only perform the negative portion of the repetition for 2-3 sets of 5 reps every other week. Another aspect of Taylor’s workout routine was that he varied sets, reps, and weight. He didn’t let his body adapt to any particular routine. By shocking his muscles in this manner, Taylor was able to increase his strength and muscle mass. While Taylor used free weights for his workouts, he would attach giant rubber bands to create more even tension throughout his lifts. This forced his muscles to work harder allowing them to grow even more. As filming neared, Taylor was exercising so hard that he began to lose weight. Therefore, he dropped all cardio and just focused on weightlifting and proper nutrition. Taylor’s abs are fantastic. He only trains them 3 days per week though to avoid overtraining. Just like any other muscle, abs need rest to grow. He tries to work his entire core to maintain a balanced look. His preferred exercises were leg raises, reverse crunches, and planks. Finally, Taylor took every 3rd day off from training and never trained more than 5 days per week to allow his body adequate time to recover. Of course he also incorporated a proper diet that focused on eating a surplus of calories to allow his muscles to grow.
