A representation the marriage-feast at Cana at which Jesus turned water into
wine. Christ, radiating light, sits at a long table with various guests; a series of
steps lead up to the table and the room is flanked by columns. In the foreground
are a number of servants, including one pouring wine into another container, one
climbing the steps and another waiting on the sidelines at right with a dish of
food. This engraving was made by Jacob Matham (see above) after Taddeo
Zuccaro. Published in Haarlem by Robert de Boudous. 1616. School:
Netherlandish. The print is lettered below centre on a scroll: "Ioh, 2 NUPTIÆ IN
CANA GALILEÆ./Taddeo, Zucchero, inu, I. Mattham sculp./Robb. de Baudous
excudit, 1617". The print appears to be a reproduction of a fresco, but the location
of the original painting is obscure. Dimensions: height: 296 millimetres; width:
405 millimetres.

Taddeo Zuccaro (1529 1566) was a painter who worked in Rome. He was born in
S. Angelo in Vado (in the Roman Marches) in 1529, and died in Rome in 1566.
The fragmentary nature of his work-record, and style-shifts reflecting the artistic
developments of the period have aroused some fascination among art-historians.

He came to Rome at the age of 14, where he principally trained himself by
copying earlier masters. His recorded work before 1553 has disappeared, and his
early development can be reconstructed only from drawings. The influence of
Correggio and Parmigianino is discernible in some of his drawings of c. 1550 and
in some of his earliest surviving paintings. Until c. 1551 Zuccaro seems to have
been chiefly occupied with façade decorations in the manner of Polidoro. During
1550-1 he was employed on minor commissions for Pope Julius III. In 1551 he
was in Urbino. He returned to Rome in 1553 and between 1553 and 1555
collaborated with Prospero Fontana on the decoration of Villa Giulia. During
1553-6 Zuccaro worked on S. M. della Consolazione, Mattei Chapel, executing
scenes of the Passion in an exaggeratedly Mannerist style derived from Francesco
Salviati and Tibaldi. After various minor papal commissions he returned to
Urbino in 1560 to paint portrait of Virginia della Rovere, daughter of Duke
Guidobaldo II. Vasari states that Zuccaro had returned to Rome and was at work
in SS. Trinità dei Monti in 1566. The evidence of drawings establishes that he
received the original commission for the high altarpiece in S. Lorenzo in Damaso,
probably not long before his death. Federico completed this and other
commissions were left unfinished. He was also known as Taddeo Zuccari.

Christ sits in the boat at left, with five men accompanying him and drawing fish
from the water; etched and engraved after a drawing by Raphael. Published by
John Bowles in London c. 1721. School: Italian. Dimensions: height: 357 mms;
width: 432 mms. From a series of eight plates (a title and seven scenes)
reproducing the cartoons executed by Raphael for a series of tapestries for the
Sistine Chapel, commissioned by Pope Leo X. (The cartoons are now in the
Victoria & Albert Museum.) This is Plate 4. The title-plate, by Chaperon Fame
Crowning Raphael is found in the Bowyer Bible as print 5 in Volume 1.

Raphael (1483 1520) was at the peak of his reputation while Bowyer was
interleaving his Bible, and he was not displaced in Britain until the
Pre-Raphaelite movement of the later nineteenth century. It is therefore no
surprise to find so many prints relating to him in the Bowyer Bible. Bowyer
himself commissioned and published a series of engravings showing details
from Raphael s famous Transfiguration . They are all in the Bowyer Bible and
listed below. Raphael is also known as Raffaello Santi, Raffaello Sanzio, and
Raffaello.
