THE SEARCH CONTINUES (WORKING TITLE)

EXT. BACK GARDEN - MORNING
Water drips from a hose near the swimming pool. Birds are
chirping, signifying the start of the day. We hear a car
pulling into the driveway.
INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
The kitchen tap also drips slightly, as we hear a knock at
the door. Suddenly we hear forceful knocking at the front
door. We move over to the main room, where the front door is.
INT. MAIN ROOM - MORNING
The knocking continues as a disheveled-looking man comes
sluggishly to answer the door; he is wearing only his
underpants and a large bedroom robe. The man is BARRY VALE.
Muttering to himself about the early hour, BARRY opens the
door.
BARRY
(Annoyed) Who the hell is-...
He cuts off at the end, shocked at what he sees in front of
him; two imposing men wearing traditionally "Men In Black"
outfits; suits, black sunglasses and white earphones
connected to their left ear. Both have scowls on their faces.
One is named AGENT SAMSON, the other is AGENT MAVERICK.
SAMSON holds a small, beeping device in his hand. They stand
in silence for a moment.
BARRY (CONT'D)
(Cautious) Can I... help you?
SAMSON
(Stern) Sound check.
BARRY
(Confused) What?
The beeping device makes a louder beep followed by a poor-
quality recording of BARRY saying "What?". The two agents
look at it for a moment.
MAVERICK
(Disinterested) It look okay?
SAMSON clicks the top of the device, stopping the beeping. He
begins sliding it into his chest pocket.
SAMSON
It's fine.
BARRY
(Freaked Out) I'm sorry?
2.
The device, muffled inside the Agent's pocket, lets out
another poor-quality recording of BARRY saying "I'm sorry".
It is ignored.
SAMSON
Sorry, sir. It's protocol. You're
Barry Vale, correct?
BARRY
(Confused) What? Protocol?
MAVERICK thrusts forward, grabbing BARRY by the necklining of
his robe and pushing him up against a wall.
MAVERICK
(Angry) Look here, scumbag. We're
the ones asking questions here, you
got that?
SAMSON, worried, pushes MAVERICK and BARRY apart.
SAMSON
Woah, woah, woah, Agent Maverick,
calm down. Your renegade attitude
might have gotten you a job with
the agency, but it also got you
discharged from the force.
MAVERICK seems to calm down slightly, BARRY coughing up in
the back as he tries to recover.
MAVERICK
Yeah, I suppose so. Thanks, Agent
Samson, your caring nature has
always served our partnership well.
BARRY (IN BACKGROUND)
(Mumbling) Jesus christ..
The beeping device lets out another poor-quality recording of
BARRY mumbling "Jesus christ". It is ignored.
SAMSON
Let's start the sweep.
MAVERICK nods in agreement, and the two head off in different
directions; MAVERICK towards the kitchen, and SAMSON to the
living room. BARRY begins to compose himself.
BARRY
(Stuttering and Gruff) Hey! Hey,
wait a minute!
BARRY walks into the living room to see SAMSON waving the end
of a vacuum cleaner through the air. The sound of the vacuum
blocks out BARRY as he shouts.
3.
BARRY (CONT'D)
(Shouting) Who the hell are you
guys?
SAMSON cheerily continues moving the vacuum cleaner around
the room.
BARRY (CONT'D)
(Shouting) Hellooooo?!
SAMSON turns to see BARRY, who has an extremely annoyed
expression. After a while, he bends down and clicks off the
vacuum.
SAMSON
Can I help you?
BARRY
Yes! You mind telling me why you
and your guy here are being all
weird and running around my house
in suits? What are you, Tommy Lee
Jones?
SAMSON
Oh, sorry. That's classified.
BARRY
You can't say whether or not you're
Tommy Lee Jones?
SAMSON bends down and clicks on the vacuum. He begins to
continue his sweep.
BARRY (CONT'D)
Hey! Heeyy!
BARRY bends down and clicks off the vacuum. SAMSON turns to
him.
SAMSON
(Stern) Please don't turn off my
searching device, sir.
SAMSON bends down to turn the vacuum back on.
BARRY
(Quickly) It's illegal to search
someone's house without a warrant!
SAMSON stops, then slowly bends back up and looks BARRY in
the eye. There is a short silence, then a long sigh from
SAMSON.
SAMSON
I am Agent Samson. My partner is
Agent Maverick.
4.
SAMSON (CONT'D)
We're here because we believe you
may be harbouring a fugitive.
BARRY
You think i'm harbouring a
fugitive? Couldn't you have just
told me that?
Melodramatically, SAMSON walks to a window. Dramatic music
seems to surge.
SAMSON
I'm sorry, Mr. Vale, but we just
couldn't chance it. You see, this
fugitive is very... Illusive.
There is an awkward silence as the music surges. There is a
sudden stop as BARRY points out;
BARRY
Isn't than like the defining trait
of a fugitive?
SAMSON looks over to BARRY, somewhat confused. Suddenly,
there is a loud shout from off-screen;
MAVERICK (O.S.)
Samson! Get over here!
SAMSON gasps and suddenly pulls out a pistol, shooting at the
walls randomly.
BARRY
Hey, hey, hey!!
SAMSON lets out a breath and puts the gun back in his pocket.
SAMSON
Sorry, I got surprised.
SAMSON runs over to the kitchen. BARRY follows him, looking
over at the bulletholes in the walls and tutting.
INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
MAVERICK stands by the sink, one hand on his holstered gun.
SAMSON stumbles in, exhausted.
MAVERICK
What were those gunshots?
SAMSON
Sorry, I got surprised.
MAVERICK
It's understandable.
5.
SAMSON
So what's going on?
BARRY walks in.
BARRY
I'd like to ask you guys some
questions if that's okay.
MAVERICK begins running for BARRY.
MAVERICK
You!!
BARRY
Oh, dear god, not again.
BARRY grimaces in preperation for the beating, but SAMSON
stops MAVERICK.
SAMSON
Hey now, Rash Randy, what's the
matter?
MAVERICK
Come take a look yourself.
MAVERICK points to the sink. Intrigued, SAMSON walks over to
see what's in it. MAVERICK looks over at BARRY disdainfully.
Reaching the sink, SAMSON looks at it for a moment, covering
his mouth with his hand.
SAMSON
(Shocked) My god.
MAVERICK looks over to BARRY.
MAVERICK
You want to explain this to me?
MAVERICK grabs BARRY, bringing him over to the sink. We see
what's inside it; two empty cups. There is a silence.
BARRY
...Yeah?
MAVERICK
Two cups.
BARRY looks down at the cups, then back at MAVERICK.
BARRY
Y...yeah?
MAVERICK
Two cups!
6.
SAMSON (O.S.)
That's two cups.
BARRY
So what?
MAVERICK
Why would you have two cups in your
sink at this hour, when you're the
only one living here?
BARRY
I.. I dunno, I guess I just had two
cups of coffee this morning.
MAVERICK
(Laughing Slightly) You mean to
tell me you didn't re-use the cup?
BARRY
Yeah... is there something wrong
with that.
MAVERICK and SAMSON look at eachother for a moment, then
begin laughing hysterically.
MAVERICK
Implying you don't re-use your
cups! Oh god, that's a good one!
SAMSON
Kid, you think we're from the la-la
goo-goo land where we believe you
use a new cup for every drink?
BARRY
I just don't like using the same
cup twice...
MAVERICK
La-dee-da, Miss Daisy, do you put
on new shoes whenever they touch
dirt, too?
SAMSON
You buy a new toothbrush every time
you brush, fancypants?
MAVERICK
Next Ritchie Rich over here will
tell us you replace your phone
every time you drunkenly call your
ex-wife!
MAVERICK continues laughing heavily, but SAMSON stops
completely. SAMSON and BARRY look at MAVERICK oddly for a
while. Noticing this, MAVERICK abruptly stops, coughing non-
chalantly and looking embarrassed.
7.
MAVERICK (CONT'D)
So where are you hiding him?
BARRY
(Mockingly) Why don't you look,
seeing as you already started doing
your "sweep"?
SAMSON
That won't do us any good...
BARRY
What?
The beeping device in SAMSON's pocket quietly replays BARRY
saying "What?" from earlier. It is ignored.
SAMSON
It's like I told, you, the fugitive
we think you're harbouring, he's...
The music swells slightly again.
SAMSON (CONT'D)
Illusive.
The music abruptly stops.
BARRY
What are you trying to tell me?
MAVERICK and SAMSON look at eachother for a moment, before
nodding. SAMSON pulls BARRY aside, grabbing him by the
shoulders.
SAMSON
Barry Vine of 32 Strider Lane, we
believe that you are harbouring an
Invisible Man.
There is a long silence as BARRY stares at SAMSON. BARRY
looks over to MAVERICK, who nods reassuringly. When BARRY
speaks, he seems to be holding back intense laughter.
BARRY
How would.. How would you even
prove something like that?
SAMSON
With this.
From his pocket, SAMSON pulls out a small phone-looking
device. On the screen it reads: "INVISIBLE MAN PRESENCE:
YES".
BARRY
Does it even tell you if how far
away it is?
8.
SAMSON
No, we just drive around, and then
sometimes it says yes.
MAVERICK
So stop messing around, and tell us
where he is.
BARRY pushes SAMSON away.
BARRY
(Loudly) I don't know where the
Invisible Man is! I'm not even
going to bother asking for proof of
it being real. Where did you even
get this equipment?
SAMSON
(Stuttering) The... the boss. Our
boss.
MAVERICK
Yeah, our boss gave them to us.
BARRY
Who's your boss?!
MAVERICK walks close to BARRY, pushing him slightly.
MAVERICK
Look, we're getting a lot of
questions from you but no answers.
Don't act like you don't know where
he is.
BARRY
How would anyone know where an
invisible man is?
SAMSON
He says things!
MAVERICK
Yeah, he says stuff. One time, we
almost caught him, and he got away,
but before that he turned to me and
he said "You're ugly and stupid".
SAMSON turns to look out the kitchen window.
SAMSON
Who even says that to a person...
MAVERICK
The invisible man has no manners.
9.
BARRY
Well, in a shocking revelation, I
don't know where this mythical man
is. Sorry.
MAVERICK
Pfft, that's what they all say-
MAVERICK is cut off by a surprised-sounding SAMSON looking
out the window.
SAMSON
(Shockewd) Maverick, he has a pool.
MAVERICK
(Shocked) What?!
MAVERICKS rushes for the kitchen window and looks out. There
is a pool. MAVERICK looks back at BARRY.
MAVERICK (CONT'D)
(Annoyed) Why didn't you tell us?
BARRY
What, are invisible men half
mermaid now?
MAVERICK goes for the back door, grabbing his gun. SAMSON
follows him.
MAVERICK
No, you idiot.
MAVERICK leaves. SAMSON looks back at BARRY before leaving.
SAMSON
The invisible man can breathe
underwater.
EXT. BACK GARDEN - MORNING
MAVERICK and SAMSON stand next to eachother by the pool,
while BARRY stands behind MAVERICK. The agents are holding
their guns at the water. They both seem slightly scared.
SAMSON
(Shouting) Now, you look here, Mr.
Man! We are not afraid to shoot!
MAVERICK
(Shouting) Get out of there now,
you wiley beast!
There is a tense silence as MAVERICK and SAMSON hold their
guns to the water. BARRY begins nervously rubbing his fingers
against his palms. BARRY turns to his left, to behind SAMSON,
and nods.
