Toshiba TELA/LEADSPACE: Laptops for teachers and principals

Document Description
Toshiba laptops have been going to school since 1990, when a forward-thinking girls' college in Melbourne, Australia, supplied them to two year 5 classes. That was one of the first times laptops were formally used in a school anywhere in the world. Since then, we've been heavily involved in schools in many countries (one of the reasons the Ministry of Education sought our advice in developing the TELA program). This experience has taught us a lot about what schools, teachers and administrators need in a laptop - and one requirement overrides all others: reliability.

What we’ve learned after 17 years at school.
Toshiba laptops have been going to school since 1990, when a forward-thinking girls’ college in Melbourne,
Australia, supplied them to two year 5 classes. That was one of the first times laptops were formally used in
a school anywhere in the world.
Since then, we’ve been heavily involved in schools in many countries (one of the reasons the Ministry of
Education sought our advice in developing the TELA program).
This experience has taught us a lot about what schools, teachers and administrators need in a laptop – and
one requirement overrides all others: reliability.
Toshiba laptops have been tested
by over 20,000 teachers in new Zealand alone.
Since the start of TELA, over 1,600 NZ schools have chosen
Toshiba laptops, and over 20,000 teachers now use them. Why
not contact some colleagues and see what they have to say?
The world’s first laptop computer.
In 1985, Toshiba developed the world’s first commercially available
laptop computer. Since then, we’ve pioneered a wide range of
different laptop technologies, from processors and storage devices
to screens and power supplies. Many of these have since become
industry standards.
The world’s most popular mobile computer.
We have now sold over 50 million worldwide. More people use
Toshiba laptops than any other brand.

Reliability: the single most important
feature a laptop can possess.
Reliability is not something that can be bolted on. It has to be built in. That’s one reason we
continue to design and manufacture our laptops in-house and then test new designs
thoroughly. The result? Toshiba’s laptops set industry benchmarks for reliability.

Heat is one of the leading causes of laptop failure.
Not surprising, when you consider that modern
processors run at temperatures of 100°C or more.

Meanwhile, they’re subjected to intense vibrations
that expose them to accelerations of 45G (that’s
45 times the force of gravity – top fighter pilots
black-out at 6 to 9G).
This aggressive process has one objective: identify
potential weaknesses so we can fix them. Only then
wil a new design go into commercial production.

HIgHLIgHTS
The Portégé M400 is a lightweight Tablet PC that converts in a few seconds
into a high performance laptop, so you get the best of both worlds.
In Tablet mode, the M400 lets you write directly on to the screen so you can
take notes or annotate documents like assignments or lesson plans in your own
handwriting (see below for more information about working with Tablets).
You can switch from Tablet to laptop mode, and work on the M400’s keyboard,
just like you would with a regular laptop.
The M400’s compact 12.1” screen and light weight make it convenient to work
on in Tablet mode – you can cradle it in one arm and walk around the classroom
while you make notes or illustrate points to your students.
An on-board DVD SuperMulti Dual/Double Layer drive lets you read and write
all mainstream DVD and CD formats.
The M400 features a wide range of Toshiba EasyGuard™ technologies to enhance
reliability and protect against accidental damage, including a spill-resistant
keyboard and a magnesium alloy chassis.
Tablet PCs. The tool for leading-edge educators.
Tablets are uniquely versatile tools that reward exploration and
enable genuine innovation – both personal and pedagogic.
Basically, Tablet technology lets you work with pen or keyboard,
whichever suits you (or the occasion). The big advantage? Your
handwritten notes are filed on the hard drive – the same place you
keep everything you create with the keyboard. Efficient. Your notes
can then be cut, pasted, searched, sorted and shared, just like any
other file. You can also handwrite notes directly onto PowerPoint
slides, Word documents and so on. Match the Tablet with a wireless
projector and the entire class can see what you’re writing, no
matter where you are in the room. This opens up new ways to
present material – it’s particularly useful for teaching subjects that
use symbolic languages like maths, physics and chemistry.
Other applications await invention – over to you!
