campaign of Cambodian Genocide.
Choeung Ek – Cambodia Killing Fields Choeung Ek holds the dubious distinction of being the most famous of the Cambodia Killing Fields. Although
Choeung Ek is far from being the only Killing Fields location it almost certainly received the most amount of
people; approximately 17,000 between 1975 and 1978. Choeung Ek was an extermination camp of industrial
proportions.
129 mass communal graves were discovered at Choeung Ek of which 43 have been left untouched in this
former longan orchard. Of the exhumed, skeletons of both sexes and all ages were discovered bound and
blindfolded. Bullets were generally not used to cause death as they became too scarce, too precious and too
expensive. Children were held by their legs, the heads bashed repeatedly against tree trunks and adults
were bludgeoned to death by a variety of gruesome means.
Even today as you walk around the hushed Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, scraps of clothing, teeth and
fragments of bone can still frequently be seen in the pits and on the path you are walking on as the earth is
eroded. A memorial Stupa erected in 1988 houses 8000 human skulls carefully arranged by sex and age.
Tuol Sleng - Cambodian Genocide at S:22 the Khmer Rouge Death Camp In 1975 the Khmer Rouge converted Tuol Svay Prey High School in Phnom Penh into a prison which they
called Security Prison 21 (S:21). Between 1975 and 1978, 17,000 people passed through the gates of S:21

women and children were detained, starved and tortured for wearing spectacles, speaking French, being
educated or being the progeny of educated parents.

The detainees who died during torture were buried in mass graves in the prison grounds but the majority of
the 16,993 people who faced imminent death at Tuol Sleng were taken to Cambodia Killing Fields at
Choeung Ek and their lives disposed of by means of weapons and bludgeons made from bamboo, stones,
tree trunks and whatever else could be found. Bullets were too scarce and too precious.
As you walk around Tuol Sleng, through the torture rooms and the tiny incarceration cubicles you cant
escape the pain and sorry within the walls. Faces stare back at you from walls covered with portrait
photographs of these who lived their wretched final days at Tuol Sleng; photos meticulously collected and
documented by the Khmer Rouge as a record and tally of their Cambodian Genocide.
Now a Museum, Tuol Sleng illustrates the atrocities carried our by the Khmer Rouge regime and presents in
no uncertain terms the facts on Khmer Rouge. Up until recently the museum featured a large wall map of
Cambodia made from human skulls. It’s not there now but there is still more than enough in Tuol Sleng to
make the museum a profoundly depressing experience. Tuol Sleng is one of the few places in the world
where visitors are invited to experience humanity at its worst; the darkest side of the human spirit that
potentially lurks within us all. Tuol Sleng is not for the squeamish.
Russian Market Visit the Russian Market on the way back to your Phnom Penh hotel as a tonic to lighten the atmosphere
and mood. Call it retail therapy or just therapy but you probably will need it after the morning so far. The
Russian Market (Psah Tuol Thom Pong) is renowned for clothing but it is packed full of other stuff as well;
antiquities, silver and gold jewelry, gems, silk, kramas, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, CDs
and other souvenirs.

+66 (0)2 948 7711 Tuol Sleng & the Cambodia Killing Fields Itinerary Choose to either do this excursion in the morning (08:00-12:00 hrs) or afternoon (14:00-18:00 hrs). The
itinerary includes pick up from your Phnom Penh hotel in a private car with a private guide (to visit either of
these sites without a guide would actually be rather meaningless).
Going in the morning has the advantage of being able to enjoy happier things for the rest of the day while the
afternoon visit concludes at 6.00pm at which time a stiff drink will not only be needed by also fully justified.
The killing fields of Choeung Ek Drive to the killing fields of Choeung Ek (16 km south of Phnom Penh). Between 1975 and 1978 about
17.000 men, women, children and infants (including nine westerners) detained and tortured at S-21 prison
were transported to the extermination camp of Choeung Ek. They were often bludgeoned to death to avoid
wasting precious bullets. Fragments of human bone and bits of cloth are scattered around the disinterred
pits.
Over 8000 skulls, arranged by sex and age, are visible behind the clear glass panels of the Memorial Stupa,
which was erected in 1988. Return to Phnom Penh.
Cambodia Genocide at Tuol Sleng (S:22) Visit the notorious Tuol Sleng Museum. In 1975 Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot's
security forces and turned into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest such
centre of detention and torture in the country.
More than 17.000 people held at S-21 were taken to the extermination camp at Choeung Ek to be executed;
detainees who died during torture were buried in mass graves in the prison ground.
Room after room the museum displays photographs of men, women and children covering the walls from
floor to ceiling; virtually all the people pictured were later killed.
Russian Market Visit the Russian Market (Psah Tuol Thom Pong), a lively outdoor market where you will find antiquities,
silver and gold jewellery, gems, silk, kramas, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, CDs and other
souvenirs.
