Understanding the Reasons, Risks, and Rewards of IT Outsourcing

Outsourcing can help a business to increase their profits as well as their productivity. Businesses use IT
outsourcing for functions ranging from infrastructure to software development, maintenance and
support. And outsourcing IT is viewed as a way to reduce costs, improve operational flexibility, increase
service levels, reduce management overhead or rapidly deploy new capabilities. As the nature of IT is still
evolving, IT Outsourcing is still an emerging field. It is the most cost-effective way for companies to hire
qualified individuals for specific IT jobs without having to commit to the significant costs of maintaining a
year-round in-house team.
But is there more to outsourcing than the bottom line, let us see the reasons, risks and rewards of IT
outsourcing.
The Reason for IT Outsourcing
As IT Outsourcing comes with a number of benefits, there are many companies who are interested in
adopting IT outsourcing. With outsourcing, the costs associated with hiring an employee like
management oversight, training, health insurance, employment taxes, retirement plans etc is eliminated.
This results in a decrease and overall control of operating costs. There is also a higher return on
investment as instead of the knowledge of one person, the company benefits from the collective
experience of a team of IT professionals. Being a feasible alternative, outsourcing can work well for
interim and for the long-term. Outsourcing allows you to retain employees for their highest and best use,
rather than wasting their time on things that may take them longer than someone who is trained in these
specific areas.

Understanding the risks involved
Companies that consider outsourcing IT functions need to be aware of the risks that are involved. With IT
outsourcing, not all the IT functions are easily outsourced. As IT affects an entire organization, right from
the simple tasks employees do everyday to the complex automated aspects, it is important to ensure that
the outside vendor is qualified to take care of the requirements. Many critics argue that an outside vendor
can never be as effective as a full-time employee who is under the same management as other employees.
There is a fear of losing control or getting locked in. If the vendor does not document their work on the
network and system, it may feel like you can't go anywhere else or take back your network. Most
outsourced companies need you to sign a year to year contract which limits flexibility.

Reaping the rewards
The rewards are numerous when it comes to outsourcing your company's IT functions. There is access to
the latest and the best technology and best service desk services as outsourcing gives you the benefit of
having more than just one IT professional.

Outsourcing your IT services provides financial benefits such as leaner overhead, bulk purchasing and
leasing options for hardware and software, and software licenses, as well as potential compliance with
government regulations. And since it's their core competency, outsourced IT vendors look to hire staff
with specific qualifications and certifications.

Whether you choose to outsource or hire internally it is necessary to know manage successful working
relationships with your IT service providers.
