Using your Phone to Control your PC/Laptop
In this tutorial I wil show you how to control your PC/Laptop using your Phone through Bluetooth. It's
great for viewing movies when you don't want to get to keyboard to skip some portion. It can also be
used for nice PowerPoint Presentation view. It's fairly easy and you may know the stuff already. If that's
the case, it's alright, otherwise read on. Moreover these days laptop comes with handy remote, which
some people don't use. Also it's flashier using your phone to control.
I have NOKIATM 5235 which is an S60v5 phone, which includes 5230, 5800XM, X6-00, C6, Samsung(c)
Omnia HD, etc. So all the example I will give are for these S60v5 devices, though some software will
work fine on phones just with Java. Also I am using WindowsTM 7 as OS for my PC and default MS
Bluetooth drivers. For other phones and Bluetooth drivers steps will be more or less same. Things you need -
* Bluetooth enabled Phone (well, obviously!)
* Bluetooth enabled PC/Laptop (again)
* Bluetooth Dongle (in case you don't have in built Bluetooth device in your PC/Laptop, you can get it
for like 100, one I have is a piece of junk, and that
too works fine. )
* There are some other basic requirements which I A Bluetooth Dongle for 100
will tell later, when appropriate. Getting your hands dirty - Step 1.
Make sure you have the right Bluetooth drivers for your Bluetooth device/dongle which
you are using on your Computer/Laptop. WindowsTM 7 comes with MS Bluetooth drivers (so
plug & play)
but your dongle may require other manufacturer's driver. Refer to your
Laptop's/dongles manual. There are other manufacturers like, Bluesoleil, Broadcom, Toshiba,
etc. Step 2.
Connect your Phone to your phone's PC suite provided by manufacturer, using
Bluetooth connection. You may be required to pair your phone with Computer/Laptop. Warning:
DO NOT just add the device (your phone)
to Computer/Laptop using "Add
from WindowsTM Bluetooth manager (you can find it at bottom right corner of
screen when you click small arrow, but only when you have the Bluetooth on your
Computer/Laptop working correctly)
. WindowsTM will install only required drivers for
phone, which enables phone to operate for data transfer. There will be no Bluetooth
protocol for making an all-time active connection.
See My Phone NOKIATM 5235 is added correctly, my brother's Phone NOKIATM X3 has a yel ow exclamatory mark, showing device (phone) is not fully instal ed. Step 3.
Select the software combination U want to use to setup the required protocol.
a. Instal the PC Bluetooth server component of selected software on your Computer.
b. Install Bluetooth Client component of the selected software on your Phone Step 4.
Now start the Bluetooth server on your Computer/Laptop. Step 5.
Now start the Bluetooth client on your Phone. Search and Connect to your
Computer/Laptop which your device (your phone)
finds. Select OK if required (as if U don't know
that already!) Step 6.
You are now ready to use your phone to control your Computer/Laptop. Have fun. I myself use it to disturb my brothers when he is watching movies; just a simple pause does the

* If you get certificate error(s) in NOKIATM phone (S60v5, S^3, etc.)
while installing some
applications, that means the app is not signed, and you have to sign it using your certificate. It's
fairly simple. If you don't have your developer certificate, acquire it here for free. It's simple and
safe (some are suspicious to give out their IMEI code, can't do anything about it :D)
. You can also
try this (I hadn't)
* Always having Bluetooth on takes battery power of your phone as well as of your Laptop. Use
* Refer to software's manual if you need assistance in setting up and get the Bluetooth
connection working for desired functionality.
