of Hawaii, told the Honolulu Star Advertiser: “Yes, Mauna Kea is sacred, and I
believe the peaceful work done at the observatories extends and continues this
tradition of connecting to the universe.”
However, some islanders are against the telescope, which they say would defile the
sacred summit of Mauna Kea. And environmentalists say the telescope would
threaten the rare wekiu bug.
"When you bulldoze the highest temple, the highest church of a people, we as a
society are saying something about what those people are worth," said Miwa
Tamanaha, the executive director of Kahea: The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance.
The telescope was unanimously approved by the Hawaiian Board of Land and
Natural resources – but those who are against it were given the chance to make their
case before the board before makes a final decision.
Work could begin early next year on the $1.3bn observatory that would house the
telescope if it is given the go-ahead.
