Who Is The Word Spy?
[for students]
Learn to speak Pig Latin! Order your lunch from the tuckshop with a spoonerism! Find out what rhyming
slang is! Can a word show what it means? Can grammar make a dog walk across a stage? The aim of this
presentation is to entertain, enthuse and creatively engage children about words and language. Ursula and
Tohby will demonstrate ideas and illustrations from the The Word Spy and The Return of the Word Spy,
and introduce the children to the mysterious and playful character of "The Word Spy" herself. Part of the
presentation will also will show how Tohby created his illustrations for the books, and the ideas behind
them. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation!

Exploring The Word Spy
[for teachers/adults]
The Word Spy books have proven to be a popular and effective approach to non-fiction. Ursula and Tohby
will introduce and explore the material contained in The Word Spy and The Return of the Word Spy, and
discuss the issues that arose as the books were written, illustrated and designed. Other topics covered
include the role the books could play in the implementation of the National Curriculum; their relevance to
literacy and visual literacy; and how the books could be used in the classroom, including specific examples.
