You are required to have a disaster plan to obtain a family child care license. This plan spells out what steps to take and what steps to teach the children to take in case of an emergency like a fire or earthquake. You need to write up your plan, teach it to the children and periodically practice it with them. No one else can write a disaster plan for you since each home is designed differently and the layout of your home plays an important role in designing your plan. This Handout seeks to help you write a plan that will work for you and the children in your care. Feel free to include additional items.

Or they've seen you pick up a shopping cart full of merchandise, swipe your card through the machine and take home your purchases, all without seeming to spend a penny.
They may have heard you gripe, or even argue, about your bills. They've heard you say that you can't afford something they wanted, and then fumed as you found the money for something else you wanted.
All the while, your children are watching, listening and learning about money. But what is it they are learning from you? The better question is, what do you want them to learn from you? What would you really like to teach your kids about money?

Your students may come from different family backgrounds and leave your classroom for different futures, but they spend a significant portion of their young lives with you right now. Next to their parents and immediate family, you have the greatest opportunity and the power to positively influence their lives. To do this successfully, you need to understand and be able to meet their needs. You already know that, in addition to intelligence, passion, and enthusiasm, teaching requires patience, sensitivity, and creativity. Having a child with Asperger Syndrome in your classroom will present unique challenges for you as a teacher, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn new ways to teach young people the academic and social skills that will last them a lifetime.

Autism is a neurological or brain disorder that profoundly affects a person’s ability to
communicate, form relationships with others, and respond appropriately to the
environment. Those affected by autism fall along a spectrum of “high-functioning”
individuals to individuals who lack any means of communicating with others. The
prevalence of autism in the population is not well described. It was once thought that
autism was relatively rare, occurring in 4-5 per 10,000 persons. More recent estima-
been identified, although there is evidence for genetic predisposition. Autism is more
common in males and is more common in certain medical conditions.

disorder (ADHD) is one of the most
common behavioral problems in children.
It not only bedevils children, but also
affects their siblings and parents. It can
be treated, but not cured. A key question
for parents is how to treat their children.
ADHD—also called hyperactivity or
attention-deficit disorder—has been
diagnosed in millions of American children
and adults. The main symptoms in
children are reduced attentiveness and
concentration, excessive levels of activity,
distractibility, and impulsiveness. Before
concluding that your child
has ADHD, consult a
doctor or psychologist
who is qualified to make
the diagnosis. Many
children whose parents
think they have ADHD are
merely very active or spirited.
Besides ADHD, some children exhibit
other types and degrees of inappropriate
behavior.

Peanut allergy is a reaction which occurs soon after exposure to peanuts or peanut products. It is due
to IgE allergy antibodies against peanut proteins.

Recent research showed that in a Western community about 1 in 200 children (0.5%) had a reaction to
peanut by 5 years of age. Overall about 1-2% of the population have a clinical reaction to peanuts.
About 3% of children have a positive peanut allergy test (such as a skin prick test) but only 1/3 of these
will develop reactions on eating peanuts. The occurrence of peanut allergy in childhood differs greatly in
different countries. Australia is a country with a relatively high prevalence of peanut allergy. If your child
has a positive allergy test but has never eaten peanut your doctor will determine the chance of
developing a reaction if there is exposure to peanut or peanut containing products.

India has a higher prevalence of child malnutrition, as manifested in stunting
and underweight, than any other large country and was home to about one-third of all
malnourished children in the world in the early 2000s. There are, however, substantial
inter-state differences in child malnutrition and also in the (generally meagre) progress
made since the early 1990s. The persistence of widespread malnutrition may seem
surprising considering the recent overall shining performance of the Indian economy.
Between 1993 and 2006 net state domestic product per capita nearly doubled in the wake
of 4.5% average annual growth. The main objective of this paper is to identify the
reasons why rapid economic growth has failed to reduce malnutrition more substantially.
The methods used are OLS, instrument-variable, fixed-effect and first-difference
regression analyses on the basis of panel data at the level of states in India. The results
suggest that the persistence of malnutrition is mainly explained by modest poverty
reduction
?
despite high overall economic growth
?
due to minuscule factor
productivity and income growth in the agricultural sector, still employing 54% of the
Indian labour force. Widespread rural female illiteracy and restricted autonomy for
women are other significant explanations.

Our bodies are contaminated with a large number of industrially produced chemicals, some of which
accumulate in our fat. The use of some of these chemicals has already been banned, whilst others are still
used in everyday consumer products, such as cosmetics and furnishings. For more information, see the
Friends of the Earth fact sheets on 'Chemicals and your health' and 'Risky chemicals in the home and how to
avoid them'.

Babies are exposed to these contaminants whilst they develop in the womb, at a time when the growing child
is extremely vulnerable to chemicals, as its organs are developing. Babies are also exposed to chemicals in
their environment, whether they are breastfed or fed on artificial baby milk. Some chemicals such as
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs - a now-banned group of industrial chemicals), and polycyclic musks (a
group of perfume chemicals still in widespread use), are stored in the mother’s body fat and will be passed on
to babies in the womb and when they are breastfed.

In 1996, 4.4 million children, or 6 percent of the U.S. population under 18 years of age, had asthma. Asthma is one of the highest-ranked causes of pediatric hospitalizations in the United States. It is the leading cause of missed school days due to a chronic condition. Although there is relatively little difference in asthma rates between black and white children, black children with asthma experience much higher rates of activity limitations, hospitalizations, and deaths than white children.
