The FSSA Division of Mental Health and Addiction sponsored a survey of people in
Indiana age 21-59 years old to determine the extent of gaming and betting for money. In
July 2005 the Survey Research Center at IUPUI conducted the survey and compiled this
report. A random sample of people throughout Indiana age 21-59 was contacted by
telephone. This resulted in a total of 751 interviews with a response rate of 33.1 percent.
Almost 90 percent of Indiana adults age 21-59 have engaged in some sort of gaming or
betting for money at some point in their lives. However, only 42 percent of this age
group has gambled in the past month. Close to half of the men in this age group report
gambling in the past month whereas only about a third of women this age have gambled
in the same time period. Past month gambling increases with age from about 40 percent
of those in their early 20’s to about half of those in their late 50’s.
For the most part, trends in reported lifetime, past year and past month gambling all
reflect essentially the same rank order of gambling modalities. Lottery tickets are, by far,
the most popular form of gaming among this age group. Roughly two-thirds have
purchased lottery tickets at some point in their lives and about a third have purchased
them within the past month. Another type of gaming similar to the lottery ranks second.
Pull-tabs have been played by over 60 percent of those age 21-59 in their lifetimes and
about 20 percent report playing them in the past month. At some point in their lives,
roughly 40 percent of people in this age group have played cards for money or bet at a
casino. But only five percent or less report participating in this type of gaming in the past
month.

Today’s college students live in a culture more accepting of gambling than
any previous generation. Poker on campus has experienced an
unprecedented popularity as has betting over the Internet. For most college
students, gambling is a social or recreational activity. However, it is not
without risk. Prevalence rates of problem and pathological gambling among
college students are among the highest of any segment of the population.
Gambling problems threaten academic success, financial well-being and
overall health. Out of the variety of harms that college students are at-risk
for, problem gambling is perhaps the most overlooked.
The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) has
stated that problem gambling should be a concern for all students, not just
student athletes. NASPA urges college officials to increase their awareness
of the potential health risks associated with gambling and further
recommends that materials related to problem gambling be integrated into
student prevention and treatment programs.

Gambling, an activity historically associated with organised crime, has become more socially acceptable,
liberalised by changing government attitudes in an increasing number of territories as the benefits from
increased fiscal revenues are realised.
However, the easing of social attitudes toward gambling are not as mature as initially supposed and may
be conceived as evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, as evidenced from the public outcry at the so-
called UK government’s gaming “free-for-all” proposals. It therefore appears that attempts to liberalise
the gambling industry are not always wholly successful.
The gambling industry is highly fragmented but figures from Global Betting Gaming Consultants have
provided estimates of its worth suggesting that the global total gambling yield (the amount lost by
customers) is currently over US$200 billion per annum, with their estimates for 2004 as US$238bni.
The UK’s Betting Office Licensees Association estimates that global gambling in all forms is worth around
US$1,000bn. Aggregating data remains difficult and figures should be treated as approximations.
The UK is the largest gambling nation in Europe, accounting for just over 22% of the total European
market. This is followed respectively by France, Italy, Germany and Spain. The US is by far the largest
country in terms of total gambling yield, US$88bn in 2004, compared to US$67bn from Europe as a
whole.

In order to assess the nature and extent of gambling problems in New York State,
OASAS conducted a household survey of adults age 18 and older. The survey was conducted
through the computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility at the New York State
University at Stony Brook’s Center for Survey Research using random digit dialing to obtain a
statewide probability sample. Among the gambling-related items included in the interview
schedule were: the frequency of engaging in 16 different gambling activities during the past year,
weekly gambling in a typical month, age of first gambling experience, and the 10 diagnostic
criteria for pathological gambling from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American
Psychiatric Association. The average interview took 16 minutes to complete. Approximately
5,100 State residents participated in the survey which was conducted between November of 2005
and April of 2006. The survey methodology is described in a separate report, “2006 OASAS
Household Survey Technical Documentation.” This brief report describes initial findings
regarding gambling behavior and problems as well as the cross-prevalence of problem gambling
