The first thing to know about public speaking is that you are responsible for what you say. No one else should ever be held accountable for the words that come out of your mouth during a speech. You have been given a special opportunity, and you should treat it as such. But also keep in mind that if you are giving a speech, it is your time to impart a specific message to your audience. It is for this last reason that in making a speech it is best to start at the end.

Over the past 20 plus years, we have accumulated considerable evidence to document the health
benefits of physical activity. Researchers have established with a fair degree of confidence just how
much physical activity is necessary to produce fitness improvement and benefits to health (ACSM,
1990; Pate et al., 1995; DHHS, 1990). Given this rather clear picture of how to obtain desirable
benefits, an obvious question is why do less than one quarter of the population engage in light-tomoderate
physical activity? The answer to this question is found largely in the realm of
psychology—specifically in the area of motivation. The task of this topic is to review current
knowledge and to translate it into suggestions for enhancing physical activity. Specific guidelines
for fostering intrinsic motivation toward physical activity are outlined.

Although andragogy became popularized in the 1970's and 1980's in the USA
through the work of Malcolm Knowles, its original introduction into the USA was in
1927 by E. C. Lindeman and M. L. Anderson. However, the oldest known published
document using the concept was authored by a German — Alexander Kapp, in 1833.
Much of the published literature in recent times has focused on the popularized use of the
term, reflecting either a wholesale support of Knowles' version of andragogy, or a
"debunking" for the reason of what some call Knowles' unscientific approach.
This study seeks to determine the major foundational works published on
andragogy in order to provide a clear and understandable linkage between the research on
andragogy and the practice of andragogy. Although there are hundreds of dissertations
and publications researching at least some aspect of Andragogy, after extensive content
analysis, eighteen (18) major English language works reflecting six (6) themes, form the
most broad, deep, understandable and justifiable foundation linking research, theory and
practice in andragogy. These publications are described within this paper and identified
with an asterisk (*) in the reference section after the conclusion of the paper.

Depending on which citation is consulted, various authors present
andragogy in different ways. Accordingly, it has often been difficult
to ascertain both the number and content of the core assumptions of
andragogy. This difficulty stems from the fact that the number of
andragogical principles has grown from four to six over the years as
Knowles (1989) refined his thinking. In addition, many authors still
seem to prefer to use Knowles (1980) as the core citation for his
andragogical assumptions, despite the fact that he updated the list
twice since then. The addition of assumptions and the discrepancy in
the number cited in the literature has led to some confusion.

In the early 1970s when andragogy and the concept that adults
and children learn differently was first introduced in the United
States by Malcolm Knowles, the idea was groundbreaking and
sparked much subsequent research and controversy. Since the earli-
est days, adult educators have debated what andragogy really is.
Spurred in large part by the need for a defining theory within the
field of adult education, andragogy has been extensively analyzed
and critiqued. It has been alternately described as a set of guidelines
(Merriam, 1993), a philosophy (Pratt, 1993), a set of assumptions
(Brookfield, 1986), and a theory (Knowles, 1989). The disparity of
these positions is indicative of the perplexing nature of the field of
adult learning; but regardless of what it is called, “it is an honest
attempt to focus on the learner. In this sense, it does provide an alter-
native to the methodology-centered instructional design perspective”
(Feur and Gerber, 1988). Merriam, in explaining the complexity and
present condition of adult learning theory.

was raising the question, "How has the German education system been faulty to not have
prepared its citizens to see, and understand and respond more appropriately to their experience?"
Apparently the German citizens did not see the pickle they were in. Rosenstock-Huessy writes
opportunities and challenges ahead in terms of research and practice.
This chapter examines some key issues in the development of the
concept and philosophy of andragogy, future research needs, and
developing applications in practice. This chapter is not meant to be
all inclusive, but rather to identify the key issues that will shape the
research and practice of andragogy in the coming years.
